Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Camacho.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Classical bass player from Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I also played tango music. I became a double bass teacher at the National Youth Orchestras after working part-time jobs for a few years. I then moved to the USA with a scholarship at the University of Georgia. A few years later, I formed the Athens Tango Project, and that was a decade ago. Since then, I’ve been performing and teaching, both locally and internationally.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was mostly not smooth, honestly, but it was never boring! Choosing the double bass at 19 meant for years of practicing at 6 am before commuting to my service or office job. When I finally achieved a double bass teaching position, it wasn’t long before I moved to the USA and started over all of it: college, on-campus job. I didn’t have a work permit at the beginning. The most recent struggles have been developing a professional group in an area of the country where there are almost no musicians specialized in it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a classically-trained double bassist specialized in tango music. I’m proud of having learned from my favorite bassists back home, people like Horacio Cabarcos and Pablo Guzmán. I enjoy being part of the continuity of such a complex art form like tango music. I’m known as the musical director of the Athens Tango Project. What sets me apart is usually my sound and my stubbornness!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I dislike the traffic! I love the variety of music you can find, the local and international restaurants, the national parks we have when you drive a few miles in any direction. That’s such a luxury I enjoy!
