Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurel Gregory.
Hi Laurel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been a creative person. I know it’s a cliche to say “ever since I could hold a pen I loved to draw!” But for me, ever since my mom pulled out the hot glue gun for crafts, I knew I wanted to do something with my hands. I grew up in North Carolina and I remember there was this place my parents would take me and my younger brother to called Marbles Kids Museum. That’s where I learned to sew. There was this little corner where I would always run to when we got there. It had a ton of scrap fabrics and I would love to just hand sew whatever pretty fabric colors there were together into a… well mess.
In the summer between 5th and 6th grade, I was introduced to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic by a classmate. Needless to say, that was my first obsession. Immediately watched every episode that was out. And by the time 6th grade started, people knew me as the My Little Pony girl.
That was my first fandom.
In 7th grade, my mom took me to Bronycon 2014. My first con. I spent the entire year before earning it with good grades since I was a few states away in Maryland. I had found out about it through Instagram and Deviantart. I was SO excited to go. I learned about cosplay through that. I remember wanting to cosplay a character to Bronycon but not being able to find a wig that fit the color scheme in my mind. So, I found a YouTube video that taught me how to dye a wig with sharpie and rubbing alcohol. It didn’t work well and was a mess. But it was my first cosplay.
Over the years I would go to cons in my hometown. But then COVID hit and I was supposed to start college. It was 2020 and I decided to start a TikTok. I just kept posting my cosplays everyday. I mean, I really didn’t have anything else to do. And apparently nobody else did because everyone was watching them.
I kept growing as a cosplayer and creator. Making friends, learning new skills and I’ve now traveled all over the country for cons!
I ended up moving in Atlanta last year and I’ve met so many more friends and lifelong connections. It all started with cosplay and a hot glue gun.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve had a bit of struggles. Burnout was a big one for a long time after people started going back to work after Covid. And of course, I started as a teenager so I’ve made and lost a lot of friends. People grow and change and they may not grow and change with you.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love to cosplay and share my crafting with everyone!
How do you think about happiness?
Making something I’m satisfied with. Whether it be cosplay or a video/ photo I create. I love to make art.
The world is too beautiful to not share your journey.
