Daily Inspiration: Meet Manuk Torossian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Manuk Torossian.

Manuk, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I learned my craft in the workshops of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar. At seventeen I moved to New York, earned my GIA Gemologist certification, and spent years setting diamonds for some of the industry’s most respected designers.

In 1999 I brought that standard to Atlanta — and never looked back.

For over two decades, Luxor Fine Jewelry has been a manufacturing studio first. Every custom piece, every repair, every setting handled in-house by myself. My wife Talar joined in 2008 and brought the warmth that turned first-time clients into regulars, and regulars into family. Now settled into our Chastain Square studio, Luxor has become exactly what a jewelry store should be — a neighborhood fixture, built on craft and kept alive by the people who walk through the door.
Some businesses are built on product. This one is built on people.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Learning to adapt to the technology. Learning and improving each day as much as I can. The economy affects us, too.

An artist in pursuit of their passion knows it is a bumpy road. A business owner knows that as well. All you can do is control your perspective. Be grateful you’re able to do what you love everyday, and the road paves itself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a jeweler and a gemologist, but what I really am is a maker. Everything that leaves my studio is made by my hands, start to finish. I cast the metal, set the stones, manufacture the settings, do the finishing. Most places don’t work that way anymore. I always have. I specialize in custom design, which to me means sitting with someone, understanding what they want, and building something that didn’t exist before. An engagement ring, a cocktail ring, a pendant that belongs to one specific person and no one else. I love the pieces that challenge me. The more complex the better. That’s where the real work happens.
What I’m most proud of is when someone comes back and tells me they wear the piece every single day. That they can’t stop getting compliments on it. That people stop them and ask where it’s from. When someone calls me a true artist, when they gasp when they see it for the first time — that never gets old. That’s why I do this.
After forty years, people ask me if I ever get tired of it. I don’t. This is my hobby. It always has been. I just got lucky that it became my life.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Love the vibes. And Bones Steakhouse. Hate the traffic. And the potholes.
