Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiphiknee De Herrera.
Hi Tiphiknee, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey as an artist began in high school in Oregon, where I developed a close relationship with my art teacher, who recognized my potential and encouraged me to push myself creatively. During my sophomore year, I was moved into an upperclassmen art class, an experience that challenged me to work harder, grow my skills, and take my art more seriously.
After graduating, I attended the Southern Oregon Art Academy, where I spent a year studying classical fine art techniques, specializing in hyperrealistic sight-size charcoal and graphite drawing.
Eventually, I experienced creative burnout and stepped away from visual art entirely for seven years throughout my twenties.
In 2018, I found my way back to art during a pivotal chapter of my life. For the first time, I was single and learning how to be alone. Art became a way to reconnect with myself, explore my creativity, and rediscover a part of me that had been dormant for years.
What began as a personal return to creativity gradually grew into something much bigger. Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to developing my skills, building my art business, and cultivating a community of fellow creatives.
Looking back, my journey hasn’t been a straight line. It’s been one of growth, burnout, rediscovery, and reinvention. And in many ways, I feel like I’m still just getting started.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road! One of my biggest struggles throughout my artistic journey has been burnout. There have been times when I’ve had to push through creative exhaustion, and others when I’ve stepped away from making art entirely, including a seven-year hiatus in my twenties.
I’ve also struggled with finding my place in a world that isn’t necessarily designed for creatives. I’ve always had a difficult time fitting into the structure of a traditional job, and choosing to pursue art professionally has meant navigating financial uncertainty while building a career from the ground up.
Establishing my name, developing my skills, and building a sustainable business have taken years of persistence, sacrifice, and a whole lot of trial and error. Being a professional artist means wearing many hats, and balancing the creative side with the business side can be challenging.
But through it all, I’ve learned that growth isn’t linear. There are seasons of incredible inspiration and productivity, and seasons where simply showing up is an accomplishment. I’m still learning how to find that balance, honor my creative energy, and build a life that allows me to do what I love without losing myself in the process.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a professional visual artist and the owner of Rare HueMan Artistry, specializing in surrealism, figurative oil painting, and digital illustration. My work often explores the human experience through symbolism, emotion, and elements of the natural world. I’m particularly drawn to the intersection of duality, creating pieces that invite viewers to look a little closer, question their perceptions, and find their own meaning within the imagery.
While my personal work tends to lean toward surrealism, I also create commissioned portraits, custom artwork, and illustrations. I love the versatility of being an artist and continually challenging myself to explore new subjects, techniques, and creative approaches.
I also work as an art instructor, teaching in my home studio and at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art. Sharing my knowledge and helping adult students develop their skills has become an important part of my creative practice. I enjoy creating an encouraging environment where artists of all experience levels can experiment, build confidence, and discover their own creative voices.
Beyond my personal artwork, one of my proudest accomplishments has been founding AbstrACTION Art Group in 2021. What started as a desire to connect with other creatives has grown into a community of hundreds of artists who encourage, challenge, and inspire one another. Through collaborative prompts, exhibitions, and events, I’ve had the privilege of helping other artists find their voices and share their work with the world.
I think what sets me apart is my willingness to continually evolve. I’m largely self-taught in oil painting, and I’ve dedicated countless hours to refining my skills, experimenting, and pushing beyond my comfort zone. I don’t believe an artist ever truly arrives at a point where there’s nothing left to learn.
Ultimately, I’m most proud that I’ve built a life centered around creativity, not just through the artwork I produce, but through the connections I’ve made, the students I’ve taught, and the opportunities I’ve helped create for others. Art has given me so much, and being able to give some of that back to my community is incredibly meaningful to me.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue growing Rare HueMan Artistry, both as a business and as an extension of my creative identity. One of my biggest goals is to dedicate more time to creating ambitious, meaningful original artwork, further developing my artistic voice, and pushing the boundaries of what I’m capable of.
Another major focus is continuing to grow AbstrACTION Art Group and creating more opportunities for artists to connect, collaborate, and exhibit their work. Building a supportive creative community has become just as meaningful to me as creating art itself.
Ultimately, I don’t have one singular destination in mind. I want to continue evolving, experimenting, and embracing opportunities that challenge me. My hope is to build a career that not only continues to grow and support me financially, but also allows me the freedom to create authentically, inspire others, and contribute something meaningful to the world through art.
