Today we’d like to introduce you to Trey Anthony.
Hi Trey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began at Paul Mitchel Atlanta in 2014. When I first started, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was thrilled to be in the city and I was ready to learn. I got off to a rocky start and thought I might have made a mistake by coming to cosmetology school, but I stuck it out and tried to enjoy the journey. After being in school for almost six months, I was accepted into the Phase Two Program, basically an Honors program for hair. Phase Two is where I really began to learn; shout out to Jan and Mary Alex!
Upon graduating from Paul Mitchell, I started to look for work as an assistant. Little did I know, I would end up assisting for a total of three and a half years. This may seem like a long time to work under people while licensed, but it’s the reason I have the eye for hair that I do now. I truly believe watching masters of the craft do what they do best is how you learn. My time spent as an assistant gave me the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing and influential Hair Stylists in Atlanta. Over the last few years, I have had the chance to grow my personal brand, work on editorial shoots, national hair competitions, film and television. My journey is far from complete and I plan to do so much more.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To say getting to where I am now has been difficult would be an understatement. My struggles started in early childhood. Growing up my family life was much different than my peers. Both of my biological parents struggle with drug addiction and mental illness. Around age 14, I began living with my maternal grandparents. Prior to this change, life was always very unpredictable; however, I’m not here to say that I had a terrible childhood. My grandparents have always played an enormous role in my life. My sister and I never wanted for anything and that is solely because we had our grandparents. They saw to it that we stayed in school, dreamed big, and never gave up. My love and appreciation for them is unmatched.
I’ve struggled with anxiety for as long as I can remember. This can quickly become a nuisance when you are closely working with many different people, all with very different personalities, for up to 10 hours a day. Over the years, I’ve really had to seek help to better understand my anxiety and how to deal with it effectively. All this to say, I am so grateful for this crazy life I get to live. My struggles are what made me and I wouldn’t be who I am today without them. They made me strong, taught me to be kind, and most importantly, started a fire in me to be better and to do better.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently a specialist at Melrose & McQueen Salon in Inman Park. I specialize in extensions, balayage, cutting, and styling. I am best known for my blonding techniques that melt perfectly with my guest’s natural hair. However, you will not only find me working behind the chair. My work has been featured in magazines, music videos, television shows, and films. My personal favorite is the recent campaign I was able to work on with photographer Savana Ogburn for Versace Jeans Couture.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to take an idea and run with it. Often, when working on a set, the photographer will have a vision of what they want, and it will be a look I have never styled, but give me two bobby pins and some hairspray and I can turn the party.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up in South Georgia as a queer kid was an experience, to say the least. I was always much more enthusiastic and definitely more dramatic than the other boys in my class. I liked to be creative in every way. I loved art, theatre, chorus, band, anything to give me the ability to create. This always put a bit of a target on my back, but I didn’t care. Something I have always been is authentic. I never felt the need not to be myself. I knew that I was different but I saw that as a good thing. I wanted to stand out. Blending in was never an option for me.
