Daily Inspiration: Meet Tuwan (DJ Trak) Banks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tuwan (DJ Trak) Banks.

Hi Tuwan (DJ Trak), thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I founded Trak Music Distribution because I personally witnessed the need for artists with potential who lacked an effective way to release their music without being lost in the system.I initially helped local artists with track releases and platform setup, but it soon became apparent that what we were creating went beyond one-time releases.

Trak Music developed into a hub over time, integrating branding, marketing, education, and distribution. We have attempted to establish a system in which artists not only post music but also acquire the skills necessary to manage their rights, cultivate a fan base, and approach their work as a business. We are now in a position where artists can flourish on their own terms and the community feels represented in each release thanks to a combination of technology, culture, and hands-on assistance.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely was not smooth.Although there were several mistakes in the process, the vision was clear. Early on, the biggest challenge was resources—limited funding, limited reach, and limited connections in an industry that thrives on all three. It required juggling many responsibilities at once, serving as a distributor, marketer, event coordinator, and occasionally an artist’s consultant.

Another hurdle was credibility. When artists were already familiar with larger distributors, it was difficult to persuade them to trust a new distribution channel. It required constantly showing that Trak Music was a partner that genuinely cared about ownership, independence, and longevity rather than just serving as another middleman.

There were also the growing pains of technology—learning how to integrate systems, manage catalog rights properly, and keep everything transparent. Each roadblock slowed things down, but in a way, it sharpened the mission. The difficulties demonstrated that the battle was about creating a path for independent artists to thrive without compromising; it was about more than just one company.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
To be honest, I try to create memorable moments in my work. As a DJ, I do more than just turn up and spin songs. Whether it’s organizing an artist presentation, bringing different groups together under one roof, or curating the vibe in a club, my main focus is on creating experiences. I read the crowd and maintain the proper feel throughout the evening, which is part of my specialty—blending sounds that people don’t often expect to hear back-to-back.

My greatest accomplishment is providing independent artists with a legitimate platform. The top songs on the charts may be played by anyone, but I enjoy discovering new music and promoting up-and-coming artists. What I believe makes me unique is that I approach every song as a story rather than just a playlist. For me, it’s about bringing people on a journey where they feel like they were a part of something more than simply a party, not just about putting tracks together.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about Atlanta is the culture—it’s the heartbeat of music, especially hip-hop and R&B. Whether you’re a DJ, artist, or small business, the city has a way of nurturing talent and providing a platform for it. Being a part of this environment keeps me inspired and focused because there’s always something going on here. Atlanta seems to be a city where you may start with just a dream and make it a reality.

What I like least is how saturated it can feel. Because there is so much talent, sometimes voices get lost and the focus shifts from community to influence. When everyone is competing for the same attention, it can be challenging to break through the noise. Even so, it forces you to identify your lane and make it undeniable.
