Today we’d like to introduce you to Cornell (CLAS6IC) McCall.
Hi Cornell, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story started while I was in college working at a printshop in Birmingham, Alabama doing prints and copies for a guy named Madison (think Ace and Mr. Pip in “Paid in Full”). In between customers I would listen to hip hop and play around with a program called Adobe Photoshop that we used to open and edit certain types of files for print. While working at the printshop I landed an internship two hours away with Hot 107.9, a hip hop radio station in Atlanta, Georgia. With some knowledge in Photoshop and a love for hip hop music, an internship in the radio station promotions department was perfect. I would intern at the radio station Thursday to Sunday and sleep on my childhood friend’s couch in Atlanta and drive to Birmingham Sunday through Wednesday for school and to work at the printshop.
After a period of about six months I had started making my entire week of pay from the printshop in just two days doing graphics for different people in Atlanta that I would meet through the internship program. Eventually, I dropped out of college, quit the printshop and moved to Atlanta. In the course of interning with Hot 107.9 I was awarded the opportunity to join Rickey Smiley’s production team as a production assistant producing graphics. During that time I was able to meet, connect and network with many people, businesses and brands; specifically within the entertainment industry and on the nightlife scene in Atlanta. After a couple years working with Rickey Smiley production team, I embarked on a journey to build my own branding and marketing label, which you know today as CLAS6IC Label.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a ride; one with lot of bumps, curves and hills for sure. Once I moved to Atlanta, I was able to tell right away I had to move differently than how I did when I was Alabama. I had to learn and it didn’t come overnight – I’m still a student. Atlanta was a city. I meet all types of people from different places in Atlanta. In a nutshell, I feel like I saw every struggle Donald Glover’s fictional character Earn faced in the hit FX TV series “Atlanta”. Everything from homelessness, being hustled and being locked up.
