Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Candace Giles.
Hi Dr. Giles, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in East Point, GA. Since I was young, I had a dream to be a doctor, specifically a pediatrician. However, I discovered my love for psychology when I went to college at Emory University. From there, I spent the next 10 years completing medical training along the east coast starting with my medical degree at Howard University College of Medicine in DC. This is where I ultimately decided my career focus by bridging my passion for mental health and love of children to become a child/adolescent psychiatrist. I did my adult psychiatry residency at Jackson Hospital in Miami, my child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and finally my forensic psychiatry fellowship back home in Atlanta at Emory University.
So, I am a triple-board certified child/adolescent, adult, and forensic psychiatrist. I’ve worked in a wide variety of environments including emergency rooms, inpatient units, outpatient offices, and in legal settings. I have been working independently in the outpatient psychiatry field since August 2018. However, it has been a long-awaited dream to create my own company that is patient-focused and whose mission is centered on breaking down the stigma of mental health and normalizing receiving psychiatric services. Mental health can be just as critical as your medical health, and problems in either area can impact the other. I started PsychSynergy Practices, LLC, in December 2021 due to the lack of access and the lack of personalized psychiatric care in the community, especially for children and adolescents.
Since its inception, I have been honored to be named Top Psychiatrists in Georgia by Women In Medicine (2023), Who’s Who in America for Business Owners (2023), Honorable Mentioned for Best of Georgia (2024, 2025), and Castle Connelly Top Doctor for consecutive years (2023-2026). I have been featured in the East Cobber magazine (2023) and have been a guest on the Good Neighbor Podcast of Cobb County (03/2025). I feel immensely blessed to have these opportunities and hope that my message regarding the importance of mental health continues to reach a wide-range of communities.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every single step has been a challenge in some way. In college, I was told that I wouldn’t make it as a doctor and should consider being a nurse instead. Being a nurse is an honorable path but that wasn’t my career-goal. Throughout my medical training, the constant sacrifices needed to be made were difficult. I missed so many different experiences with family and friends. Each quiz, test, and board-exam were extremely strenuous. I recall almost having a panic-attack during one of my medical licensing-exams. The stakes are so high and failure seems catastrophic.
However, to be vulnerable, the hardship that impacted me the most was losing my father suddenly on March 15, 2016, to a house-fire that happened in my childhood home. Both were gone in an instant. It is still an ongoing challenge, and it still hurts that I never got to say goodbye or to say I love you. It still hurts to think of all the memories, pictures, and items that were lost in the fire. I felt stuck for a while, but I had to learn how to cope with that pain to move forward in life. It truly made me realize that you can’t predict the future and just how precious life is. It made me appreciate things more and gave me a drive to be more present in my life whether that’s with family, friends, or with making my life-goals a reality.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about PsychSynergy Practices, LLC?
My business is called PsychSynergy Practices, LLC. It is an independent mental health company providing outpatient psychiatric care to children, adolescents, and adults aged 5-55.
