Exploring Life & Business with Crystal Jackson of The Birth Homie Doula Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Jackson.

Hi Crystal, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been interested in labor and delivery all my life! It all started when I would watch “a baby story” on TV when I was a kid, and I was crazy fascinated and obsessed! Soon after that, I decided I wanted to be an OBGYN or an OB nurse. I worked in the medical field as soon as I could get a job! I got my STNA License while I was still in high school and began patient care from there on! I went to nursing school, and during clinical, I attended my first birth the had a doula. The doula was so knowledgeable and let me observe her care. Little did I know I had already been a doula for my friends and family for a long time! After discovering this, I decided to educate myself more and make a career out of it!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all! I think the biggest struggle besides consistency is imposter syndrome. In a world where aesthetics are the highlight it’s hard to be who you are and make it work for you! I’ve rebranded probably three times since I started my journey and will probably be doing it again lol But anyone I meet who asks me questions like this, I always say learn who you are and stay who you are. If you change (and you will) your business should too!!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Birth Homie is well, me! I am a traditionally trained doula and Certified Midwife assistant! My business specializes in holistic care with a special scope on plus-size pregnancy and intimacy. My business is based on my community! I want to break the stipulation of having a doula being a luxury and instead a necessity! We all deserve a luxurious birth and help without judgment or fear! The black community suffers the most when it comes to childbirth and postpartum! I really want to help us understand intimacy as well! I want people to know most about me is this is a free zone! I treat everyone like family because essentially we are! No code-switching required here! I show up as me, and I expect everyone to do the same! I’m most proud of in my brand that I am true blue! No surprises from me, and I love that My clients get to be themselves!!!

How do you think about happiness?
So many things! But, my daughter being herself without restrictions, seeing my hard work at play within my business, my parenting, my personal life, etc. Seeing my friend’s dreams come true! Witnessing anyone achieving what they sought out to! Love…I love Love! Most importantly, being my authentic self no matter what I’m doing!
