Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Minchew.

Hi Daniel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2008 I started Studio Space Atlanta to create a space where everyone could afford to film. Back in 2008 there where only a few stages and they all had 10hr minimums. We started off with 2hr minimums, no charge for electricity (charging for electricity is the norm in stage rental). We made studio rental in Atlanta affordable. in 2013 with 2 partners I opened Atlanta Filmworks, a large studio for feature film and Tv. Atlanta Filmworks was booked with AMC for 10 years straight. In 2017 we expanded again and opened up Studio Space Atlanta Midtown, in 2018 we opened our famous Studio 3 Multistage that has 9 different pre-built sets including a courtroom, hospital room interrogation room, Jail cell and many other sets. We were the first Atlanta studio to offer standing pre-built sets. Finally in 2020 we opened our West Atlanta location, opening 3 more studio at that location.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business is never a smooth road. The first roadblock was an initial partner I had. After the first year this partner decided to leave the company, however when he left had actively tried to divert business away by hosting a fake website with contact info that was never answered. I had to learn SEO and DMCA complaints quick to get back control of our virtual presence. In the end, this bump in the road helped by forcing me to learn SEO which turned out to be massively important. moving forward. We also learn from each clients needs. We listen. When a client brings up a need that we didn’t have we made it happen for them. We still hold true to this culture today.

There are countless other hurtles, daily, weekly monthly and yearly. The bumps never stop, you just learn how to problem solve really well.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Studio Space Atlanta?
Studio Space Atlanta has 7 studios at 2 locations with over 50,000 square-feet in stages for the indie and commercial producers. We host vertical production as well as large commercials, corporate videos. We actually have become pretty famous for hosting iconic music videos for the largest artists in the business. In addition to motion, we also rent out our stages for stills (photography). Studio Space Atlanta has become the default studio in Atlanta and we are on our 18th year. In the end we are successful because we keep our prices low and we treat people right.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We are starting to a lean into virtual production utilizing LED volumes and gray box stages. We recently teamed up with Form Studios bringing in a large LED volume as well as motion capture and cine robot technology. We are starting getting inquiries into gray box studios for AI production. Vertical productions over the years has been here plenty filming on our pre-built set stages, this saves vertical production tons in set construction and locations.
