Today we’d like to introduce you to Felicity Folson.
Hi Felicity, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I played games a lot with my dad when I was younger . Gaming led me into being intrigued by technology because of all the visuals it came with. When I was in high school, I used to write short stories for fun. Eventually I posted a story on Wattpad. It gained a little attention around school when a few people found out it was me, so I started making custom book covers for myself . That honestly made me dive deeper into the different ways I can make my visions come true. I was just trying to take my writing more seriously but it really sparked my passion for designing things as well .
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I used to be my worst enemy at times. I would constantly beat myself up, thinking that if my work didn’t look a certain way, it wasn’t good. I wouldn’t even listen to when people would tell me it looks good because I felt like it wasn’t my best. I was too hard on myself at one point. Over time it got so bad to the point I forgot why I fell in love with what I do. I felt like everything had to be “perfect,” but as I got older, I realized that I would rather have authenticity over perfection. Nothing is ever going to be perfect, but it will always be remembered when you’re passionate and intentional about what you do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Melaninprint ?
I specialize in promotional and branding services. It could be a business card, a flyer, a YouTube intro, or whatever is desired. I’ve had clients come to me with just a few details, and I help with the rest. Even if you have no idea what it is you want, you could give me anything just as simple as a color, and I’ll help the rest. I’m proud of my business because it’s not a job to me. I move what I do. Creating is second nature for me; it comes naturally. I love seeing the look on my client’s face when I show them their project.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned that my talent is meant to be celebrated, not hidden from the world. I’ve always been the quiet one who rarely says much unless I was comfortable, but lately I’ve been forced to come out of my shell. It’s still new to me, but I’m a firm believer in if you have a dream or a passion, it’s meant to be chased. It wouldn’t be on your heart for no reason. I also learned that nothing is ever going to be “perfect”. Work with what you have & be appreciative for what you have no matter how small it is. Take your time and allow yourself to grow so you can get to where you’re trying to go. As long as you’re genuinely trying, the rest will fall into place.
