Today we’d like to introduce you to Rianni Tyes.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a kid, I always helped my mom and my grandma in the kitchen. Whether it was helping my mom make sweet potato pies or helping my grandma clean collard greens as a toddler. I was always fascinated watching them cook and wanted to help any way I could. When I got to high school, I started taking the culinary arts classes and getting more involved. When I was a senior in high school, I entered a local individual cooking competition and won 1st place in the state. That brought me to nationals where I won 1st place and received a $55,000 scholarship to The Culinary Institute of America, the top culinary school in the nation. From there, I started taking culinary arts very serious.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I was a kid, my family and I experienced homelessness briefly. During that time period, my mom made it a point to always be optimistic and positive for me and my brother.
Like with everything in life, my culinary arts career has had its fair share of twists, turns and detours.
There is always a new obstacle to overcome but I always keep the bigger goals in mind to keep me on the right track.
Now within my adult life, I make it a point to focus on solutions and not problems. It is so easy to get down when you are going through a rough patch.
Most recently, I was in a three car accident on 285 where my car was totaled. It has definitely been a challenge to stay motivated and persevere while running a business without a personal vehicle. Thank God I have my family, friends and amazing clients to help me, keep me going and smiling.
