Exploring Life & Business with Whitney Teyf of Tucker Dance Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Teyf.

Whitney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started dancing when I was just three years old, growing up in Northern Virginia, and it quickly became a central part of my life. I went on to attend East Carolina University, where I earned my degree in dance education in 2006. Right after graduating, I took a leap and founded Expressions In Motion Dance as an after-school dance program. What started small grew quickly over the years into a thriving program serving our community.

Now, 19 years later, I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come. In November 2025, we purchased our very first permanent space, and in February 2026, we officially opened Tucker Dance Studio. Before that, our Tucker classes were held at the Tucker Recreation Center, so having a place to finally call our own has been a full-circle moment. It’s been an amazing journey of growth, passion, and dedication to sharing the joy of dance.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many small businesses, we’ve faced our share of challenges over the years, the most difficult being the pandemic. That time forced us to completely rethink how we operated and find new ways to stay connected with our dancers and families.

Throughout the journey, we’ve had to learn how to pivot again and again, whether that meant adjusting our programs, changing locations, or finding creative solutions during uncertain times. Each challenge has pushed us to grow stronger, more resilient, and more committed to our mission.

Looking back, those obstacles have really shaped who we are today and have made this recent milestone of opening our own studio even more meaningful.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Tucker Dance Studio is a place where every child belongs, whether they’ve been dancing for years or are just stepping into a class for the very first time. We’re passionate about creating an inclusive, encouraging environment where dancers can grow in both skill and confidence.

What truly sets us apart is that we don’t just invest in our dancers, we invest in our teachers as well. We believe that strong, inspired instructors create the best experience for our students, so we place a big emphasis on ongoing teacher development and training.

We’re especially proud of the many ways we bring dance education to our community. In addition to classes at our studio, we offer on-site programs in schools, field trips, and professional development opportunities. Being able to reach students through multiple avenues has been a huge part of our impact over the years.

Right now, we’re incredibly excited about this new chapter with our very own space, Tucker Dance Studio. It’s something we’ve worked toward for a long time, and we can’t wait to continue expanding our offerings and welcoming even more families into our dance community.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I wouldn’t naturally describe myself as a risk-taker, but I’ve learned that taking risks is an essential part of building and growing a successful business. I’m very fortunate to have my husband, who is also our COO, as a partner in this journey as he’s much more of a risk-taker and has consistently encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone.

One of the biggest risks we’ve taken recently was opening our own studio, Tucker Dance Studio. It was a major leap, especially after years of operating in shared spaces, but it was also a necessary step forward for our growth and vision.

Over time, I’ve come to see risk not as something to fear, but as something to approach thoughtfully and with purpose. The biggest opportunities often come from those moments where you’re willing to take a chance and invest in what you’ve built.
