Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree Bettis.
Bree, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After seeing my grandmother survive breast cancer and watching so many close to me become affected by breast cancer, I decided to become an advocate for the breast cancer community. Later, I founded The Pink List in September 2018 in Detroit, MI.
Our goal orignally was to just raise money in order to help out my very close friend with her mother’s medical expesnes. We did this by hosting fundraising events around the city of Detroit. Some of them included our Laugh for Charity show and Pretty in Pink Brunch. After the passing of her mom, I decided to keep going and see what other families I could possibly help.
Since launching the foundation, The Pink List has sent over 75 Pink Kits, chemotherapy care packages, to breast cancer patients across the country. We also have a cancer assistance progrsm that is aimed to provide coverage for homecare expenses.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my starting years is getting other people to support my cause. There are so many nonprofits, some not so legit, and that can make gaining sponsors and donations difficult when first starting out and trying to establish your brand. I would find myself getting ignored a lot when reaching out to brands and businesses to consider working with me and/or donating to The Pink List.
Looking back, it was (and still is) a learning process. Because I was getting rejected so much, it made me look into better ways to go about asking people for support and donations. It also made me double check that I had everything on my end together.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Pink List?
The Pink List is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit that serves as a center for breast cancer education, resources, and financial support. Our mission is to bridge the gap between breast cancer education and young adults. We also provide resources to families affected by breast cancer through initiatives like our chemotherapy care packages, scholarship fund, and financial assistance program.
Here at The Pink List, our goal is to make sure families facing breast cancer are aware of the resources around them, as well as bridging the gap between breast cancer education and young adults. We strive to ensure that young adults are both aware of the signs/symptoms of breast cancer and the resources available for those affected by breast cancer. In addition to providing education and resources, we also send chemotherapy care packages to breast cancer patients across the country and are currently in the works of setting up a scholarship fund for students affected by breast cancer.
So far, we’ve sent over 75 Pink Kits to breast cancer patients and donated $500 to a family in need through our cancer asistance program.
We are hoping to officaly launch our scholarship fund for the 2022 – 2023 academic year.
Our goal for the upcoming year is to raise $7,000 for the following initiatives:
– Send 75 Pink Kits
– Award a student affected by breast, either through their own diagnosis or a loved one, with a $1,000 scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year
– Allocate $1,000 to our VIPink Program
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I think happiness can come from a lot of places and has a different time limit everytime we experience it. Happiness can come from achieving a goal or simply by seeing a loved one you haven’t see in a while.
Helping other people makes me the happiest cause you truly never know when someone has reached their breaking point. Breast cancer sucks, no one asks for it. So to be able to ease the challenges that a family faces when a loved one is diagnosed is the most rewarding feeling ever.
