Hidden Gems: Meet Britain Singleton of Brit’s Southern Sweets.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britain Singleton.

Britain, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My baking journey actually started when I was 11 years old. My mom loved to shop, and I wanted to be able to buy things for myself the way she did. Since I was too young to get a traditional job, my mom encouraged me to find something I could do to earn my own money. We decided baking would be a good place to start.

In the beginning, I sold simple cakes made from boxed cake mix and tub icing to family, friends, and some of my parents’ coworkers. Eventually, my mom began teaching me how to bake from scratch, and that’s when my love for baking really started to grow. What began as a way to earn spending money became a skill and creative outlet that stayed with me throughout my teenage years.

I continued baking through high school but stepped away after graduating in 2003. At the time, I didn’t really have a business mindset. I wasn’t pricing my products appropriately, and what had once been enjoyable started to feel more like work than fun. Since it wasn’t a major business at that point, I decided to take a break.

Everything changed in 2011. I brought some red velvet cupcakes to work one day, and a coworker, Nicole Solomon said she would pay me to make her some. That single request reignited something I had always enjoyed, and before long, one order turned into another. Over time, my business grew largely through word-of-mouth referrals and repeat customers. Since then, I’ve balanced baking alongside a full-time career while creating desserts for weddings, baby showers, graduations, birthdays, corporate events, and countless celebrations in between.

In 2019, I moved out of state, which naturally slowed the business. I returned to McDonough, Georgia, in August 2025 and, after taking some time to get settled, found myself rebuilding and reconnecting with customers while approaching the business with a fresh perspective. Today, I’m focused on growing Brit’s Southern Sweets into a more structured and professional business while maintaining the homemade quality and personal touch that my customers have come to expect.

As part of that growth, I’m currently rebranding the business and laying the foundation for its next chapter. My goal is to combine the warmth and authenticity that built my customer base with the systems and professionalism needed to create a sustainable, long-term business.

Looking back, it’s funny to think that all of this started because an 11-year-old girl wanted shopping money. What I didn’t realize then was that I was learning entrepreneurship, customer service, resilience, and the value of hard work. Those lessons continue to shape every dessert I create and every customer I serve today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been learning that being good at baking and running a successful business are two very different skill sets.

For many years, I struggled with pricing my products appropriately. Like many creative entrepreneurs, I wanted to make people happy and focused more on the baking itself than on the business side. Over time, I learned the importance of valuing my time, skills, and the quality of the products I create.

Another challenge has been balancing entrepreneurship with a full-time career. Building a business while maintaining a demanding professional career requires a lot of discipline, time management, and sacrifice. There have been plenty of late nights, early mornings, and weekends spent baking for customers while also meeting the responsibilities of my day job.

Relocating out of state in 2019 created another obstacle. Moving meant stepping away from an established customer base and putting the business on hold while I focused on settling into a new environment. Returning to Georgia in 2025 meant rebuilding relationships, reconnecting with customers, and essentially starting a new chapter for the business.

Through each challenge, I’ve learned the importance of adaptability and perseverance. Every obstacle has taught me something valuable, and those lessons have helped me become a better business owner. Today, I approach Brit’s Southern Sweets with a stronger understanding of both the creative and business sides of entrepreneurship, and I’m excited about where that growth will lead.

We’ve been impressed with Brit’s Southern Sweets., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Brit’s Southern Sweets is a home-based dessert business specializing in homemade Southern-inspired desserts made with quality ingredients and a personal touch. While I offer a variety of treats, I’m especially known for my sweet potato cupcakes, red velvet cupcakes, banana pudding, pound cakes, and other classic desserts that remind people of family gatherings, holidays, and special occasions.

One thing I’m particularly proud of is that much of my business has been built through word-of-mouth referrals and repeat customers. There’s no greater compliment than a customer returning year after year or recommending me to their friends and family. Those relationships have been the foundation of my business and have allowed me to be a small part of so many celebrations throughout the years.

What sets Brit’s Southern Sweets apart is the combination of homemade quality and personalized service. I believe desserts should not only look beautiful but also taste just as good as they look. My goal is to create products that people genuinely enjoy and remember long after the event is over.

Currently, I’m in the process of rebranding and growing the business with a focus on creating a more polished customer experience while staying true to the homemade recipes and Southern flavors that my customers have come to love. As I continue to grow, my mission remains the same: creating desserts that bring people together and add a little sweetness to life’s special moments.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is my faith, my family, and living a life of integrity. Those values influence every area of my life, from my career and business decisions to how I interact with people on a daily basis.

I’ve learned that success means very little if it’s achieved at the expense of your character or the relationships that matter most. Whether I’m serving customers, supporting family and friends, or working in my professional career, I want people to feel respected, appreciated, and valued.

I also believe in the importance of hard work, perseverance, and continuous growth. Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and there have been seasons that required me to adapt, start over, or take a different path than I originally expected. Those experiences have taught me resilience and gratitude for both the successes and the lessons learned along the way.

At the end of the day, I hope to be known as someone who genuinely cared about people, worked hard, and used her talents to bring a little joy to others. Whether that’s through a conversation, an act of kindness, or a dessert shared during a special celebration, those connections are what matter most to me.
