Today we’d like to introduce you to Deledra Cullen. 

Hi Deledra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey, I’m Dee Cullen! I handcraft candles, wax melts, room sprays, & carpet freshner in Birmingham, AL. I started my business during covid, in hopes of keeping my girls home and safe. Well, my business took off great and I am now in a storefront & providing candle-making classes. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely not been an easy one, but I always remind myself that “Nothing worth having will come easy”. I would probably say a struggle I’ve faced would be online sales. I would blame the fact of you not being able to touch them or smell them, so that makes a person second guess the purchase. Thankfully, Pop-up Shops are a thing now! Every person that has smelled candles/products of mine have said only great things about them all.

I hand-pour small batch soy candles, which are chemical-free and non-toxic. I pride myself in bringing high-quality products to everyone that shops with my business. I also make every product that I sale to ensure great quality is throughout my business. 

Upon opening my storefront, I came up with the brilliant idea of introducing people to candle-making classes. Candle-making is great for birthdays, celebrations, bridal parties, girls night out, anniversaries, team building, or just a unique outing. 

In addition, I also have a candle fundraiser that has been great for those who like to have other ways to raise money for many different causes. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I can’t say that I believe in luck per se, but I’ve had many great things happen in my business and I am grateful for them all. 

I try to look at the good and the bad in a positive light because they both are going to have lessons to learn from in the end.
