Hidden Gems: Meet Kate Walsh of Katie Bop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Walsh.

Kate, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Katie Bop is a dream come true. It was a surprise to myself when I started Katie Bop, though, looking back, maybe I should have seen it coming. When I graduated from high school in 2021, my sights were set on getting a degree in international business, so I could land a job that paid me to travel. That summer, I had no idea a visit to AmericasMart Apparel Market would change my life. If you have been to a merchandise market, you know it’s exciting! It awakened parts of my heart and a younger version of myself. The three-year-old me who refused to take off princess dresses, the five-year-old me who wore pink Cinderella heels with my hospital gown during surgery to remove my tonsils, and the 2nd grade me who insisted on wearing a sequined scarf to “help” my school uniform wanted to live there forever. The high school me, who entered pageants, mostly because of the gowns, basked in the glamour of the showrooms. Every me wanted to wear all the clothes and share them with friends. For as long as I could remember, there was always a need for “something to wear.” Thinking ahead to college, I knew the need would increase. Walking into the market was like stepping into an enormous closet filled with sparkling solutions to the dilemma.
Without knowing it, I had been preparing for this day for three years. Since I was 15 years old, I had been selling clothes on consignment apps (with parental supervision) and had earned enough money and experience to invest in starting a boutique. Right away, Katie Bop was born. My goal was to find and share beautiful and unique items with anyone who needs “something to wear.” I hope to make it easy for every girl to find and wear clothing that emulates her own style and beauty, and makes her shine. In addition to Katie Bop, I recently graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Economics and an area of emphasis in data analytics. Furthermore, I am thrilled to begin law school this year.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Operating a small business while being a student has presented its obstacles. Some days, I am running out of class early to arrive on time to a pop-up, and others I am answering customer service emails while typing notes in a lecture. Thankfully, I quickly acquired time management and task prioritization without too many obstacles. However, I have learned that the value of these two qualities is ineffable in overcoming struggles. Balance is a must! Coffee helps, too!

Katie Bop is an online boutique and clothing brand that is tailored towards young women. I, Kate, founded Katie Bop right after graduating from high school. Over the past five years, I have learned to efficiently grow, market, manage, and model for my brand. I believe Katie Bop is set apart from others through a personal brand element, as I will never sell anything that I would not wear myself. My favorite part of Katie Bop is the connections I have made over the past few years. I have worked with many philanthropic organizations, councils, and clubs. I’ve made countless friends through pop-ups and photoshoots, and I am excited to continue building relationships with others through fun and fashion!

What makes you happy?
I believe happiness should not depend on circumstances. Through faith, friendships, and activities, I find joy in all types of situations, whether easy or challenging. My friends are my safe place; they make me laugh harder than I even knew possible and always encourage me. They are such a source of joy in my life!
