Hidden Gems: Meet Morgan Stephens of Mountain Mama’s Coffee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Stephens.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I never set out to build a big business. I just wanted to create a coffee shop that felt like home. Mountain Mama’s started as a small dream and has grown into something much bigger thanks to an incredible community and team. At the end of the day, we’re still focused on the same thing: serving great coffee and making people feel welcome.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest challenge honestly hasn’t been a lack of opportunity. It’s been the opposite.

Mountain Mama’s has grown much faster than I ever expected, and with that growth has come an incredible number of opportunities. New locations, partnerships, projects, ideas. At a certain point, the challenge stopped being how to grow and became how to decide what not to do.

I’ve had to learn that not every good opportunity is the right opportunity. The hardest part has been staying disciplined enough to protect what makes Mountain Mama’s special while still allowing it to evolve. Every decision now gets filtered through the same question: does this align with who we are at our core?

Growth is exciting, but preserving your identity while you’re growing is where the real work happens.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Mountain Mama’s is a family-owned coffee shop in Blue Ridge, Georgia, serving specialty coffee, scratch-made food, and genuine hospitality. We’ve built our reputation on doing things the hard way because we believe it makes a difference. We make our syrups from scratch, focus on whole ingredients, and create food and drinks that are thoughtful, memorable, and made with care. More than anything, we’re a gathering place. Whether you’re a local grabbing your daily coffee, a family spending the morning together, or a visitor exploring the mountains, we want you to feel welcome here.

One of the things I’m most proud of is that every part of the brand has been built by hand. I create all of our seasonal menus, merchandise collections, illustrations, and creative direction myself.

Four times a year we launch entirely new seasonal menus and merch collections. It’s one of my favorite parts of the business. Over the years, Mountain Mama has become a character of her own. She’s been everything from an astronaut traveling through space to an alligator-riding cowgirl swinging a lasso. Each season tells a different story while still feeling unmistakably Mountain Mama’s.

That creativity extends to our menu as well. We’re constantly creating drinks and food that people haven’t experienced before, but we’re doing it with real ingredients and a commitment to quality. We love surprising people with unexpected flavor combinations while keeping everything approachable and genuinely delicious.

What sets us apart is that we take the quality of our coffee and food seriously without taking ourselves too seriously. We have a lot of fun with what we do, and I think people can feel that the moment they walk through the door.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think people are often surprised to learn that I never set out to be a coffee shop owner. I’ve always been a creator first. I love building things, whether that’s a brand, a menu, a space, an illustration, or a business.

Coffee just happened to be the medium that allowed me to bring all of those passions together in one place.
