Today we’d like to introduce you to Shameka Burrowes.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey has been a combination of personal growth, motherhood, healing, and learning how to turn my experiences into something meaningful for others.
Becoming a mother made me intentional about breaking generational behaviors I felt were holding us back as a community. One of the most eye-opening moments of my journey happened on my son’s first visit to Jamaica, where I was born and raised, —where I found myself recreating a negative experience I had with my own mother when I was in the sixth grade. I didn’t realize that experience was still living in my subconscious until I saw the parallel play out with my son. It broke my heart because I was doing the very thing I had been so intentional about not repeating.
That moment taught me that wanting to break generational cycles and actually healing the things that contribute to them are two different things. It opened my eyes to the deeper work I needed to do, and it became part of the inspiration behind my journal, My Journey Redefined.
From there, my passion for personal development and understanding human behavior continued to grow. I created A Redefined ME-ka, my coaching brand, to help people recognize patterns, release what no longer serves them, and redefine how they move forward. That vision eventually expanded into Redefined Foundations, Inc., my nonprofit, where I’m working to raise our collective awareness so we can strengthen our relationships and improve our family dynamics.
Today, I’m building more than businesses. Through coaching, community conversations, and experiences that bring people together, I want to create spaces where people can grow, connect, and become more intentional about what they carry forward into future generations. My journey has taught me that we can’t always control what shaped us, but we can choose what we do with that awareness—and that’s the core of My Journey Redefined.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges has been learning how to balance the vision I have with the reality of what I can manage while continuing to stretch my capacity. I’m a mother, I work full-time, and I’m building businesses that mean a lot to me, so learning to manage my time, energy, and resources has been a journey in itself.
Another challenge has been realizing that just because I have a vision doesn’t mean everything will come together on my timeline. There have been moments when I’ve had to pivot, rethink my approach, and remind myself why I started in the first place. Building something from the ground up also means learning as I go, sometimes without having all the answers or a large team to lean on.
Personally, healing has presented its own challenges. It’s one thing to encourage others to do the work, but I also have to be willing to look at myself, acknowledge my blind spots, and take accountability for the things I still need to work through. I’ve learned that growth isn’t always comfortable, and sometimes the very things I’m trying to teach others are lessons I have to continue practicing myself.
I think one of my biggest lessons has been learning to give myself grace without losing sight of the vision. I’ve had to accept that I can’t do everything at once, and that slowing down doesn’t mean I’m not making progress. I’m still learning, adjusting, and figuring things out, but I’ve come to understand that building something meaningful is a process. The goal isn’t to have a perfect journey; it’s to remain committed to the purpose, even when the path looks different than I imagined.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My work is centered around personal development, emotional healing, and strengthening relationships. Through A Redefined ME-ka, my coaching and personal development brand, I help people recognize patterns that may be holding them back, work through unresolved experiences, and become more intentional about how they show up in their lives and relationships. My approach is rooted in my framework, Recognize, Release, Redefine, which encourages people to build self-awareness, take accountability, and make meaningful changes.
As my vision grew, I also founded Redefined Foundations, Inc., a nonprofit focused on trauma-informed education, financial literacy, community wellness, and relational healing. Through initiatives like Redefined Link Up, The Redefined Experience, and Redefined Insights, I’m creating spaces where people can connect, have meaningful conversations, and learn from one another. My goal is to raise our collective awareness so we can strengthen our relationships and improve our family dynamics.
What sets my work apart is that I look beyond individual behaviors and encourage people to examine the patterns, experiences, and beliefs that may influence them. I’m interested in the bigger picture—not just personal growth, but how that growth impacts our families, our communities, and future generations. I also believe this work should be accessible to everyone, which is why my nonprofit focuses on creating opportunities for education and connection outside of traditional coaching spaces.
What I’m most proud of is seeing my personal journey evolve into something with the potential to impact others. The journal I created, My Journey Redefined, the coaching work, and the community initiatives are all connected by the same purpose: helping people become more aware of what they’ve inherited, what they’re carrying, and what they have the power to change.
Ultimately, the word Redefined is bigger than branding my offerings. It’s a reminder that we can acknowledge what shaped us without allowing it to dictate our future. I’m building a brand and a community that encourage people to challenge old patterns, build healthier relationships, and become more intentional about the legacy they leave behind.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to take away from my story, it’s that we don’t have to have everything figured out to start building something meaningful. I’m still learning, growing, and navigating my own journey while bringing this vision to life.
I believe a lot of the things we struggle with in our lives and relationships begin with a lack of awareness. Sometimes we repeat patterns without realizing where they came from or how they’re impacting the people around us. I want my work to help change that, not just for individuals, but for families and future generations.
My vision extends far beyond coaching or community events. I want to create spaces where people can learn, connect, grow, and have access to resources that support healthier relationships and stronger communities. There’s so much more I want to build, and I’m excited about what’s ahead.
I’m learning to trust the process, give myself grace, and remember that the work I’m doing today is part of something bigger than me. Ultimately, I want the impact of my work to reach beyond my lifetime. I want to help create a legacy where awareness leads to change, change strengthens families, and stronger families help build healthier communities.
