Inspiring Conversations with Jeremiah Michelson of Jeremiahs Landscape Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremiah Michelson

Hi Jeremiah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in 10th grade, winter of 2016/2017 out of my mom’s car with an old corded blower and Home Depot lawn bags. My goal was to just earn some additional after school money for myself. Shortly after I started, I found a used $50 push mower, in spring of 2017. After my first ew initial posts on next door and Facebook groups, things started to have a snowball effect. Instead of hanging with friends after school, I went to work, pulling ivy, mowing lawns and completing small jobs around client’s properties. Late spring of 2017, I purchased my first truck, a 2004 Toyota Tundra which was fantastic. It allowed me to expand services and haul a trailer, which was borrowed from a friend. January of 2018 was when I made the biggest purchase. a $9000 commercial mower. At that time, I thought it was crazy for a high schooler to be excited about a lawn mower. We also had about 40 lawn accounts if I remember correctly. By the end of 2018, I had a full-time employee, close to 80 properties (accounts) and was actively growing. I believe we did about 70,000 in revenue and I honestly had no idea what I was doing since my goal was to earn extra cash, not start a business. In 2019, thing started to get interesting. I was taking online college courses while in high school, so graduating early was on the Horizon. I started to really think about growing a business. We were taking on a lot more landscape ins;;action work as well, so trying to complete everything out of one truck and trailer was very difficult. I had also purchased a 6×10 trailer in fall of 2018, which was a big upgrade from the one before. In spring of 2019, I started looking for a bigger truck and trailer. A chevy 3500 and dump trailer were both purchased in April 2019. In august of 2019, I bought a 16′ Isuzu NPR box truck for our maintenance division which was a huge step. We now had a full time two-man crew for maintenance and a full 2-3 man crew for landscape installations. I was managing, selling, answering phones and helping the installation team when needed. In 2019 we did 305k in revenue, more than double from 142k in 2018. Going into 2020 I had the bigger vision of growing the businesses to a larger scale. previously, my company name was Jeremiahs Home and Yard Services, which was then changes to Jeremiahs Landscape Services. Last year in 2020, we really grew, we started hardscapes and larger projects, purchased newer mowers and equipment, a bobcat and so much more. One piece I forgot to mention earlier was we moved out of a home-based business into a 3200 sq. ft shop which was a huge game changer for us. I was hungry for a bigger and better business, as well as educate myself more in 2020. In November of 2020 we purchased another landscape business to help grow and expand. In midst of all the craziness in 2020, we ended with our best year ever. 550k in revenue, 3 full time crews, 6 full time employees and plans to keep growing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all LOL. There have been countless time where I just lay awake in my bed and think “Why am I doing this” some of the biggest struggles are below: 1) managing cashflow to make sure bills are paid 2) Employees 3) When large deals fall through 4) Making sure you are using the best use of your time during the day

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
