Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Galmish.
Hi Justin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Nuggy Dog Co. didn’t start in a boardroom. It started with a dog and a routine. A few years ago, I brought home a Golden Retriever named Jasper. Back then, he was just my dog. Today, he’s known online as Jasper Golden Nugget. At first, we were just going on walks, riding around, and living our normal routine. I started sharing pieces of that online. No plan, no strategy. Just real life. Over time, people kept coming back. Not just liking a post and moving on, but actually showing up, recognizing him, and following along. That’s when I realized something was building.
At the same time, I was living that routine for real. Early mornings, long walks, time outdoors, and a lot of trial and error with the things we used every day. I started paying attention to what actually held up. Leashes that frayed. Harnesses that didn’t fit right. Products that looked good online but didn’t work in real life. On the flip side, the things that did were the ones I kept reaching for without thinking. That’s when the idea started to take shape. Originally, I was going to just sell shampoos and colognes, but I know myself, and I would have gotten bored with that pretty quickly. The more I looked at it, the more I realized this wasn’t just about grooming. It was about everything we were using every day.
Instead of chasing trends, I built something around that. Real use. Real testing. If it didn’t hold up to our routine, it didn’t belong in the brand. We didn’t just put a logo on existing products. We built an entire brand from the ground up. Every piece of gear was designed by me, based on real world use and what I knew needed to be better. This was my first time doing eCommerce. I didn’t come into this with experience. I learned everything as I went. Early on, everything was small. I was organizing product at home, packing orders myself, and figuring things out as I went. There was no big launch moment. It was more like quietly getting things off the ground while continuing to show up online every day.
Then something unexpected happened with one of the simplest products. The Camp Clucker. A Camp Clucker video went viral, and it changed the course of everything. When I was working with the manufacturer on it, I had a couple of clear goals. It had to be obnoxiously loud, and it had to be bigger than anything else out there. I didn’t want it to be just another dog toy. I wanted something that immediately grabbed a dog’s attention and kept it. Something you could hear across the house and instantly know your dog was having a blast. What happened next, I could not have planned. Dogs loved it immediately, and people started sharing it. It spread in a way I never expected. Orders started coming in from all over, and I realized something simple could connect people to the brand in a bigger way.
Early on, I set a goal for us. Within the first three months, I wanted Nuggy Dog Co. to ship to all 50 states. It was not about volume, it was about reach. I wanted to prove that what we were building could resonate everywhere, and we did it. That milestone meant a lot because it showed that something built from real life, one order at a time, could travel further than I ever expected. People encouraged us to push hard into affiliate marketing early on, but I chose to take a different path. I wanted to build this on real use, real trust, and real connection, not just promotion.
I’m also living proof that you can build something like this without a huge ad spend. Focus on building your audience first, and the rest will follow. Everyone has these great ideas, but they immediately go into sell mode. People are tired of being sold to, and most of the time they end up unsatisfied. We took a different approach. We launched in September of last year, and we already have well over 100 five star reviews. The customer is the only part of any of this that matters. That’s something that feels lost in business today.
Creating a customer experience like no other brand has been a big part of our growth. I wanted to build something special from the very first moment Jasper is seen online. Our website is designed to feel like an extension of our social media, and every package we send out is put together with care. From start to finish, the goal has always been to make people feel something, not just receive a product. We’ve even been called the Saks Fifth Avenue of the dog industry, which speaks to the level of detail and experience we’re trying to create. At our core, we are a story driven brand.
Today, Nuggy Dog Co. is still built the same way. A lot of it is still run from home. I am still the one behind the scenes packing orders, answering emails, and creating content. What has grown is the community. People who come back, who trust what we are doing, and who share their own dogs with us. That is the part I never expected, and it is the part that matters the most. I have always had a passion and love for dogs all my life, and being able to build something around that has made this even more meaningful. I have always had the desire to build something bigger than me, and this has become that. This whole thing has been built slowly, day by day. No shortcuts, no big ad spend, just consistency and showing real life. It is like cutting down a redwood with a small hatchet. It does not look like much at first, but if you keep showing up, eventually it starts to move. That is where we are now. Still building. Still showing up. Still doing it the same way we started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges was that this was my first time building an eCommerce brand. I didn’t come into it with experience or a playbook to follow. Everything had to be figured out in real time. Product development, manufacturing, the website, fulfillment, customer service, all of it.
Early on, there were a lot of unknowns. Working with manufacturers for the first time, making sure products came out the way I envisioned, learning how to manage inventory, and understanding how to actually run an online store day to day. There were mistakes along the way, but each one forced me to get better and more dialed in.
Another challenge was doing everything myself. Packing orders, answering emails, creating content, managing the site. It all adds up and there is no off switch. At the same time, being that close to every part of the business helped me understand it in a way I would not have otherwise.
I also made a conscious decision not to rely on paid ads or push hard into affiliate marketing early on. That meant growth was slower and everything had to be earned. Every order, every customer, every bit of momentum came from showing up consistently and building trust over time.
Another challenge has been keeping up with user generated content. As more people started sharing their dogs with our products, it created an opportunity but also required time and consistency to stay engaged, respond, and continue building those relationships the right way.
The biggest challenge overall has been patience. This is not something that happens overnight. It has been a daily process of showing up, learning, adjusting, and continuing to move forward even when things feel slow.
Looking back, those challenges shaped the brand. They forced me to build it the right way, based on real use, real feedback, and real connection with the people who support it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nuggy Dog Co.?
Nuggy Dog Co. is a dog gear and grooming brand built around real life with my Golden Retriever, Jasper, known online as Jasper Golden Nugget. Every product we offer comes from daily use. The walks, the routines, the time outdoors, and the day to day care all shape what we create. I design every piece of gear myself based on what actually holds up in real situations, and our grooming products are built to be simple, effective, and easy to use. Some of our best sellers include the Camp Clucker, the Beast Harness and Collar, and the Fluffy Foam Waterless Wash. We do not rely on heavy advertising or staged content. Everything is shown as it is used in real life, which has helped build a strong connection and trust with our community. At its core, Nuggy Dog Co. is about creating products that fit naturally into life with your dog and helping people enjoy that experience a little more every day.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that might surprise people is that what we do goes beyond the products. We make people smile every day through our content, we help dog owners take better care of their dogs, and we promote a healthy, active lifestyle. At the core of it, we are here to help, and that is the true reward for me. At the end of the day, it’s a simple story of a guy and his dog, and it doesn’t get much better than that.
