Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsie Murdock.
Hi Kelsie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As long as I can remember, I’ve always loved to celebrate. Whether it was for a birthday, Christmas, a promotion at work, or even finding the last pair of shoes on the shelf in your size. Every moment deserves to be celebrated – the good, the bad, and even the ugly.
When I went to college, I originally wanted to be an event planner. Then I got a job in college working with kids in afterschool programs and fell in love with the impact that being a teacher could bring to the lives of those kids. I ended up becoming an educator, and I loved every second of it.
Fast-forward to 2023, we had our beautiful son who is now two and a half. Most recently we had our beautiful twin girls last February who are now nine months old. Living on two teacher salaries with daycare costs for three babies pushed my husband and I had to take a leap of faith to leave my teaching job and stay home to take care of our kids.
As much of a blessing and joy as it is to be a stay at home mom, times are tough and we needed to bring in more income to make ends meet. We knew I needed to try to bring in some money somewhere, somehow and that is how BRR Party Co. was created!
I took something I’ve always had a passion for, and I turned it into my mom side hustle. Our family is so blessed because my little side business is already morphed into something more than I could’ve thought. BRR Party Co. is a labor of love. Getting to help bring celebrations to life for people, while getting to be a stay at home mom to our three beautiful babies is well worth all the hard work and long nights we have put in over the last several months.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I started my business, I was naïve to what being a small business owner would actually look like. I, probably like most people, didn’t think of a lot of the challenges when starting a business. Most people think it looks fun and they only imagine the good parts of owning a business like working on something you’re passionate about or the flexibility it can bring. Little did I know there were going to be countless numbers of sleepless nights my husband and I would be spending after our kids go to bed to make this dream come true.
One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced along the way has been figuring out how to get my company‘s name out or seen. On top of trying to get my business started and to build our list of clients, I have the extra challenge of trying to build my business without spending a fortune. We only have one stable income, and we still want to provide our three babies with a childhood that they will be able to look back at with love and admiration. My husband and I have zero experience when it comes to running a business so it has definitely been a learning curve.
That being said, I’m so thankful for some other small businesses and a few supportive people who have provided us with all the tips and opportunities to help us grow the business. BRR Party Co. would not be where it is today without them and the little community we have been welcomed into.
We’ve been impressed with BRR Party Co., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
BRR Party Co. is a modern party and rental company that wants to help make your events memorable. People can rent specific items from us for any event such as stand-up coolers, umbrellas, accent chairs, decorations, and more. Though, our most popular item is our mobile party cart!
Our mobile party cart is a great addition to your event. The top of our mobile cart is interchangeable, which allows it to provide any type of bar you can think of. From a build your own bouquet bar to a dirty soda bar to an apple nacho bar and ice cream bar, our cart can make any party idea come to life!
One of the things I take pride in my company is that it’s family owned. The BRR in our company‘s name came from my babies initials as they were my inspiration and motivation to start this business. My small business is more than just about making money. It’s about building connections, hearing people’s stories, making people happy, on top of being able to spend time with my family. I love that my business is in such a light-hearted and creative space that brings people together to celebrate every special moment in life.
How do you define success?
I define success through making my clients happy. If someone is renting our mobile party cart for their event, I want it to be so memorable for them that they give recommendations to others to use our business.
I also define success by being able to make a living while also being able to stay home full-time with my kids. Some of my favorite events that I have done so far have been ones that allow my family to come visit me during the day. It’s a special thing for my kids to grow up getting to see their mom follow her dreams and hopefully will inspire them to follow theirs one day.
