Inspiring Conversations with La’Tonja Milhouse of Sweet T’s Inspirations

Today we’d like to introduce you to La’Tonja Milhouse.

Hi La’Tonja , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From the Runway to the Room Where It Happens: The Journey of La’Tonja “Sweet T” Milhouse

Some women are born knowing their purpose, others have it awakened in them, ignited by a single moment that splits life into before and after. For La’Tonja “Sweet T” Milhouse, that moment came at sixteen years old, when her big sister, Shunda invited her to a model call and changed everything.

She almost didn’t go. Depression has a way of making the world feel small, and at sixteen, Sweet T was living in that smallness. But her sister’s invitation cracked open a door, and when she walked through it, something electric moved through her spirit. Standing in that space surrounded by fashion, beauty, and possibility, the heaviness she had been carrying began to lift. What ignited was not just an interest in modeling. It was a calling. A hunger. A love for fashion so deep and consuming that it rewrote what she believed about herself.

Modeling became her first language of self-expression. She learned how to carry herself, how to command a room, and how to tell a story through her presence. Those skills would serve her in ways she could not yet imagine. From Birmingham to Denver, Sweet T’s life has been a journey of reinvention. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in Ethnic Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder and an Associate’s degree in Fashion Retailing. Over 25 years in customer service deepened her love for people and sharpened her ability to truly see a woman and speak to what she carries.

Today, at 59, she is a certified health and life coach, motivational speaker, morning show host, fashion designer, and community builder operating under her brand, Sweet T Inspirations. She hosts the Zestful Living with Sweet T morning show live on Facebook and TikTok each weekday, bringing warmth and wisdom to women who need to hear that they are not too old or too tired to live fully. Her Zest for Life Social Club, Lady Academy Workshop, and community support programs have become spaces for women over 35 who are ready to finally put themselves first.

The crown jewel of her legacy is the House of Johnnie Ruth, a fashion label named in honor of the three women who shaped her. Her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Johnnie Milhouse. Her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mamie Ruth Murray-Gordon. And her mother, Mrs. Linda Ruth Murray-Milhouse. Each stitch carries their names. Each collection is an act of remembrance.

Her most recent collection, The Goddess Experience, made its debut on June 7th, 2026, in Atlanta, Georgia. An eight-look presentation produced largely by Sweet T’s own hands as well as Mel Lee of The Fashion Taxi who provided guidance, support and vision, from repurposed and available materials, the collection was more than fashion. It was a declaration. Eight goddesses. Eight looks. Eight stories of beauty, strength and femininity brought to life on the runway. The Goddess Experience was a living testimony that creativity fueled by purpose needs no extravagant budget, only vision, faith, and hands willing to do the work.

From a sixteen-year-old girl whose sister called her toward the light, to a woman who has become the light for thousands, Sweet T Milhouse is proof that what ignites within you cannot be extinguished. It can only grow.

She did not just survive. She became a Goddess.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the greatest challenges I’ve faced was being diagnosed with Lupus in December 1999 while attending the University of Colorado Boulder. At the time, I was navigating intense fatigue, chest pain, and the physical demands of living at a high altitude. Something as simple as walking across campus and up the hills often felt overwhelming, yet I was determined not to let my diagnosis define my future.

As a young mother who had relocated from Birmingham, Alabama, to Denver, Colorado, at age 25 with my three-year-old daughter, I was also adjusting to a completely new environment. There were days when I battled homesickness, harsh winters, and the uncertainty that comes with starting over. Walking to class through knee-deep snow while managing a chronic illness tested me in ways I never imagined.

Another challenge was facing discrimination and prejudice as one of the only African American women in many of my classrooms. There were moments when I felt unseen and underestimated. I remember seeking help from an instructor on a math assignment after watching him assist other students. His response was, “You need to go back to community college.” Rather than accepting that judgment, I reported the incident and continued to advocate for myself. I knew that if someone was willing to teach me, I could learn. My education mattered.

What kept me grounded was the foundation my family instilled in me. My mother marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for equality, freedom, and justice. Her courage reminded me that I belonged in every room I entered and that I had a responsibility to keep moving forward, even when the path was difficult.

Through faith, resilience, and community support, I persevered. My daughter’s father and I both graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder, proving that determination can overcome tremendous obstacles.

Today, one of my most important lessons has been learning to pour into myself. As an empath and recovering people-pleaser, I spent years prioritizing everyone else’s needs before my own. My current journey is about recognizing that I deserve the same loyalty, support, kindness, and commitment that I so freely give to others.

I need me.

I need the time and dedication that I give others.

I need me.

I need the loyalty and commitment that I give others.

I need me.

I need the support and kindness that I give others.

That realization has become one of the most transformative victories of my life.

What matters most to you?
What matters to me most is family, faith, authenticity, and staying true to the values that shaped me. No matter where life has taken me, I’ve always remained grounded in the lessons I learned growing up: resilience, perseverance, self-respect and the importance of living with purpose.

My family is at the center of everything I do. The love, support and foundation they have provided have carried me through some of life’s greatest challenges and celebrations. My daughter, Osha Cerese, in particular, is my greatest inspiration. She is not only my daughter but also one of my biggest supporters, encouragers and friends. Watching her grow and thrive motivates me to continue growing and thriving as well.

I learned early in life that being your authentic self is one of the greatest gifts you can give to the world. I’ve always had the ability to maintain who I am regardless of my circumstances, which taught me how to think independently and trust my own voice. That ability has helped me navigate challenges, overcome adversity and pursue my dreams without losing myself in the process.

Another lesson that has become increasingly important to me is self-preservation. My Mother taught me that self-preservation is the first law of the land. For many years, I poured so much of myself into others that I sometimes forgot to pour into myself. Today, what matters most is creating balance—honoring my own needs while continuing to serve, inspire, and support others.

Above all, I strive to live life zestfully, boldly and unapologetically as myself. I believe we each have a unique purpose, and my goal is to continue walking in mine with faith, gratitude, courage and joy.
