Today we’d like to introduce you to Neil Phillips.
Hi Neil, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in the Bronx to Jamaican parents and spent my early years between New York and Neptune, New Jersey, before Georgia became home. As a lifelong student athlete, basketball shaped my discipline and drive until my playing career came to an end at the University of West Georgia. That transition pushed me to find a new purpose.
Joining Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. introduced me to the power of service and community advocacy, and I quickly realized that creating impact was what truly motivated me. While in college, I launched Guide Apparel, selling neckties and suit accessories on campus. But by the time I graduated, my vision had grown beyond fashion. I wanted to build something that would leave a lasting mark on people, not just their wardrobe.
Guide Apparel evolved into Guide Outreach, and since then, our mission has been simple: empower communities, create opportunities, and help people become the best version of themselves; from Atlanta, Georgia, all the way to communities across Jamaica.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been filled with blessings and challenges that, looking back, were really blessings in disguise. Building a nonprofit, or any business, teaches you quickly that not everyone will see your vision. I had to learn that my vision isn’t about what people think or who’s supporting it. It’s about the impact that’s made regardless.
God has consistently blessed us with the resources, opportunities, and funding to make an impact, often at times I didn’t think were possible. Of course, there’s always more we want to accomplish, but we’ve rarely lacked what we’ve truly needed.
Our biggest challenge continues to be securing long term funding. Even so, I firmly believe in keeping our heads down, doing the work, and trusting that God will provide at the right time, whether that’s through new opportunities or the right person being inspired by our mission.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Guide Outreach exists to prepare the next generation for success while inspiring them to give back to the communities that shaped them. We specialize in professional development, life skills training, mentorship, scholarships, volunteerism, and creating access through college and business tours and career activations.
What sets us apart is that we’re not just focused on helping young people become successful. We’re intentional about helping them become service minded leaders who invest in and uplift their own communities. We believe our youth are the future, and the future is strongest when success is paired with purpose.
If there’s one thing we’re known for, it’s bringing people together to create real impact. Every summer, Guide Outreach hosts our Annual Community Day in Atlanta, where more than 1,000 community members receive free school supplies, health screenings, sports physicals, food, family activities, game trucks, and access to resources that help students and families start the school year strong. It’s more than an event. It’s a celebration of community, opportunity, and what happens when people come together to serve one another.
This year’s Community Day takes place on August 1, 2026, and we’re excited to make it our biggest and most impactful event yet.
Our work doesn’t stop in Atlanta. We’ve also led relief efforts for families in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa and continue to support schools throughout Portland, Jamaica with educational resources and opportunities for students.
No matter where we serve, our mission stays the same: connect people to opportunity, strengthen communities, and inspire the next generation to lead through service.
Above all, we’re genuine. We’re passionate about our mission and always looking to collaborate with like minded and unique minded leaders to create lasting impact. We believe this work is bigger than any one organization. It takes all of us, and we’re proud to serve as a connector between resources, opportunities, and the people in our communities who need them most.
How do you define success?
Success starts at home. For me, it’s first being able to provide for my daughter because I can’t truly show up for my community if I don’t show up for my baby.
Beyond that, success is staying true to who I am and the purpose I believe God placed me here to fulfill. If I’m making a positive impact in the lives of others, leading with integrity, and remaining faithful to the mission, then I consider myself successful.
There will always be more to chase and more to accomplish, but I’ve learned there’s a difference between wants and needs. God has made sure I’ve had everything I’ve needed, and that perspective reminds me every day that I’m already living a successful life.
