Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronnie Belizaire.
Ronnie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve spent the last 20 years building my career as an interior designer, but at its core, my journey has always been about people, relationships, and creating environments that help organizations thrive.
I started in design because I was drawn to the intersection of creativity and problem-solving. Early on, I focused on learning the craft—understanding how thoughtful design can shape experiences, support business goals, and positively impact the people who use a space every day. Over time, I had the opportunity to work on increasingly complex projects, lead multidisciplinary teams, and partner with clients across a variety of industries.
As my career evolved, I found myself becoming just as interested in leadership and business strategy as I was in design itself. I enjoyed mentoring teams, building client relationships, growing business opportunities, and helping shape the culture and direction of the organizations I was part of. Those experiences helped me develop a broader perspective on what it takes to lead a successful practice beyond delivering great design.
Today, I’m excited to be stepping into the role of Managing Office Director for HKS Atlanta. It feels like a natural next chapter—one that allows me to combine my design background with my passion for leadership, talent development, client service, and business growth. While the title is changing, the foundation remains the same: creating positive impact through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to helping people and organizations succeed.
Looking back, every stage of my career has prepared me for this opportunity, and I’m energized by the chance to help shape the future of the Atlanta office while continuing to learn and grow alongside an incredible team.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and one of the most defining challenges of my career happened fairly recently.
When I joined HKS two years ago, I was asked to rebuild the Commercial Interiors practice in Atlanta. At the time, the practice was struggling, and I essentially started with one team member and a mandate to turn things around. The challenge wasn’t just about design—it was about rebuilding a business.
I needed to grow revenue, increase our presence in the local market, build a strong and reputable team, strengthen client relationships, and improve profitability. There wasn’t a quick fix. It required a lot of persistence, strategic thinking, and relationship-building. I spent significant time connecting with clients, raising our visibility in the market, recruiting talented people, and creating a culture that people wanted to be part of.
There were certainly moments when the path forward wasn’t clear. Building a practice from the ground up while simultaneously delivering work, pursuing new opportunities, and leading a growing team required balancing competing priorities every day. It pushed me outside my comfort zone and forced me to develop skills far beyond design.
Looking back, that experience taught me that leadership is really about creating the conditions for others to succeed. It reinforced the importance of resilience, patience, and having a long-term vision even when results don’t happen overnight.
Today, as I prepare to step into the role of Managing Office Director for HKS Atlanta, I can see how that challenge helped prepare me for this next chapter. Rebuilding the Commercial Interiors practice wasn’t just about improving business metrics—it was about learning how to lead through change, build trust, and bring people together around a shared vision.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
HKS is a global design firm that provides architecture, interior design, planning, advisory, and research services. We work across a broad range of sectors, including commercial, healthcare, education, hospitality, sports, aviation, and mixed-use developments, helping clients create environments that drive performance, enhance experiences, and strengthen communities.
What sets HKS apart is our belief that design has the power to create positive change. While we’re known for design excellence and innovation, our work is ultimately centered on people and the impact the built environment has on their lives. We bring together architects, interior designers, planners, strategists, researchers, and technical experts to solve complex challenges through an integrated and collaborative approach.
One of the things I’m most proud of is HKS’s commitment to becoming a leader in regenerative design. We believe that every project has the potential to be more than a building or interior—it can serve as a catalyst for net-positive impact on the surrounding community, environment, and economy. Rather than simply minimizing harm, we strive to create places that contribute to healthier ecosystems, stronger communities, and more resilient futures.
In Atlanta, we’re particularly passionate about helping organizations navigate change and create spaces that reflect their values, culture, and aspirations. Through our Commercial Interiors practice and our broader multidisciplinary expertise, we partner with clients to create workplaces and environments that support innovation, attract talent, foster well-being, and advance business goals.
At the heart of our brand is a commitment to curiosity, collaboration, and purpose-driven design. We don’t see ourselves as simply delivering projects; we see ourselves as trusted partners helping clients imagine what’s possible and create meaningful, lasting impact.
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to know about HKS, it’s that we believe great design can improve lives. Whether we’re designing a workplace, a healthcare facility, a sports venue, or a community destination, our goal is to create places that leave people, organizations, and communities better than we found them.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My advice is to think less about finding a single mentor and more about building your own personal board of directors.
Throughout my career, different people have helped me in different ways. Some have challenged my thinking, some have helped me develop leadership skills, and others have provided guidance during pivotal career decisions. No one person has all the answers, which is why it’s important to cultivate a diverse network of trusted advisors.
The same philosophy applies to networking. I’ve found the most meaningful relationships come from genuine curiosity, shared experiences, and a willingness to invest in others before you need anything in return. Many of the opportunities I’ve had throughout my career have come from relationships that were built over years through collaboration, industry involvement, and community engagement.
My biggest piece of advice is to be intentional. Surround yourself with people who bring different perspectives, stay connected, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A strong network isn’t about how many people you know—it’s about the quality of the relationships you build along the way.
