Hi Sean, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started VSNWKS shortly after leaving my career in government and politics in New York City. Taking that leap of faith was fueled by my entrepreneurial spirit and a deep-rooted desire to make a difference, helping brands and organizations on a deeper level. My experiences working with small businesses and government organizations revealed a common issue: many struggled to execute effective strategies because they couldn’t connect with their audience or communicate their vision effectively.
I noticed that, often, the vision of an organization gets lost in the day-to-day grind instead of serving as the driving force behind the work. This realization inspired me to create VSNWKS.™ to bridge that gap. We focus on aligning our clients’ operations with their core values and vision, ensuring they connect authentically with their audience. Our goal is to empower diverse founders and CEOs to build strong, communicative brands that resonate deeply and achieve their fullest potential.
Starting VSNWKS in 2017 in Atlanta, GA, was a pivotal moment. We built our foundation on integrity, excellence, and passion, aiming to become a beacon for other diverse entrepreneurs striving for success. Founding VSNWKS has been driven by a commitment to excellence and a belief that with the right support, any business can thrive. At VSNWKS, we are dedicated to helping other diverse founders. Together, we’re transforming visions into realities and driving impactful change in the business world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After eight years in business, I can undoubtedly say the road has not been smooth. As a Black male founder in the USA, I, like many other founders who look like me, understand the bumps along the way. One of the most significant challenges has been access to capital. Black men are often the least funded in business, facing systemic barriers that make securing investments and loans particularly difficult. This lack of funding can limit growth opportunities and create additional stress as we strive to build and sustain our businesses.
Another challenge has been combating stereotypes and biases. In the business world, preconceived notions about Black entrepreneurs can influence everything from networking opportunities to client relationships. Overcoming these biases requires not just exceptional performance but also constant vigilance and resilience.
Additionally, building a reliable and supportive network has been a hurdle. While networking is crucial for any entrepreneur, finding mentors and allies who understand the unique challenges faced by Black founders can be particularly difficult. This isolation can make it harder to gain the insights and support needed to navigate the business landscape effectively.
Maintaining work-life balance is another significant challenge. As a founder, the demands on my time and energy are immense. Balancing the needs of the business with personal commitments often feels like an impossible task, leading to burnout and stress.
Despite these challenges, my commitment to VSNWKS and its mission has never wavered. Each obstacle has taught me valuable lessons and strengthened my resolve. The journey has been tough, but it has also been incredibly rewarding, driving me to push boundaries, innovate, and continuously strive for excellence.
