We’re looking forward to introducing you to Leora Sowell. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Leora, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
What makes me lose track of time and find myself again is a combination of being in nature, engaging with my daughter, and photography.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Leora Sowell, and I am a photographer and a teacher. My photography business is Moments of Now Photography, and it is unique in that I aspire to provide you with photos that not only will be passed down for generations, but every time you look at them, you will notice something new.
As a teacher, I specialize in children. Each child is unique, there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to helping children learn, grow and thrive. There are things that children are born knowing, for example, an inherent curiosity to discover. Other things, they learn from the trusted adults in their lives, like how to regulate their emotions. Why me being a teacher is unique is that I teach based on where the child is at, not where I want them to be.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
In my humble opinion, what breaks the bonds between people is miscommunication. I have found that many people do not listen when people talk to them. Yes they hear the words being spoken, but they are not hearing the message underneath the words, they are not listening to understand.
How do we restore bonds? When someone comes to talk with us, about anything, it is crucial that we give this person our full, undivided attention. Don’t just listen to the words, ask questions to understand. See if the person is looking for advice, or just needs to vent.
In allowing someone to share from the heart, and truly hearing them, not only can we offer healing and learning for them, but we learn something ourselves.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that has held me back most in life is the conversation that everyone else is better then me, so why should I show what I have to offer and am capable of?
The simple answer: I am worthy. And while I am always looking to be the best version of myself, I can share my capabalities without fear.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
In the photography world, I am committed to providing individuals and families with photos that are cherished for generations. My intention is to show you a version of yourself that you did not know was there, the YOU that you may not even know is there.
In the teaching world, I am committed to helping children find their strengths and interests on their terms.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope that the story that is told about me is that I was committed to sharing the world and it’s beauty in a world where people don’t notice it very much. I hope people will share that I was beyond committed to helping children grow from their strengths and not by what society wanted.
