Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Bilkis Shinaba of Loganville

We recently had the chance to connect with Bilkis Shinaba and have shared our conversation below.

Bilkis, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I believe I am on a purposeful career path. I began by working diligently in entry-level positions, which provided me with valuable life lessons and a strong work ethic. I then advanced my education in pursuit of a master’s degree, leading to my current professional role. Today, I am proud to serve as co-owner of Millie & Graham, a dog grooming boutique.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Bilkis Shinaba, founder of Kiss Lane, a lifestyle brand I launched in 2016. Inspired by designers such as Kate Spade and Betsey Johnson, I built Kiss Lane from handcrafted products into an online boutique and beauty line. In addition to co-owning a dog grooming boutique, I continue to expand Kiss Lane as the foundation of my entrepreneurial journey and future growth.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I once dreamed of building a career in the entertainment industry as an actress and performer. Though life led me in different directions, I believe every path has a purpose. My love for music and the arts remains deeply rooted, and I honor it by releasing music when I feel truly connected and inspired. Creativity will always be a part of who I am, no matter where life takes me.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
“You are strong, Your strength will carry you—press on and don’t look behind you.”

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Very much this is the real me, and I recognize that not every audience is aligned with who I am.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
For most of my life, I followed the path set before me, doing what I was told to do. Deep down, I always knew I was a multitalented ‘Jack of all trades,’ and others saw it too—but for years, I held back. Growing up Nigerian, the message was clear: keep your eyes on the prize—education—and nothing else. Dreams outside that path were quietly set aside. Only recently have I begun to step into all the parts of myself I once tucked away, embracing the passions and talents I’ve carried in silence for so long.
