We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kimberly Sellars-Bates. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Kimberly, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
What I’m most proud of building is the quiet foundation — the systems, discipline, and inner strength that allow the work to stand long after the spotlight fades. Much of what I’ve built happens behind the scenes: trust, consistency, resilience, and a commitment to doing the work with integrity even when no one is watching. Those unseen efforts are what make lasting impact possible.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Dr. Kimberly Sellars-Bates, a leadership strategist, educator, and nonprofit development consultant. Through my work with KSTB Enterprises, I partner with organizations, entrepreneurs, and community leaders to strengthen systems, secure funding, and build sustainable impact. What makes my work unique is the blend of strategy and service — I focus not just on growth, but on alignment, equity, and long-term capacity. Much of my work happens behind the scenes, helping leaders turn vision into structure and purpose into measurable outcomes.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was realizing that my voice could open doors — not just for myself, but for others. Early on, I saw how preparation, education, and speaking up could change outcomes. That awareness stayed with me and became the foundation of my work today: helping people recognize their own power and use it to create lasting change.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there were moments when the weight of responsibility, uncertainty, and setbacks made giving up feel like the easier option. What stopped me was remembering why I started — the people depending on the work, the vision I was entrusted with, and the belief that quitting would silence lessons meant to be shared. I learned that perseverance isn’t about never wanting to stop; it’s about choosing purpose even when the path is unclear.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is real — but it isn’t the whole story. What people see is the strength, clarity, and leadership shaped by years of quiet work, reflection, and growth. Behind that is a woman who has wrestled with doubt, learned from failure, and chosen purpose daily. I don’t separate the two; I allow my private lessons to inform my public leadership.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I led with integrity, served with intention, and created space for others to rise. That I didn’t just build programs or organizations, but helped people see their own potential and walk in it with confidence. If my story is told, I want it to reflect impact over recognition — and a life committed to purpose, faith, and lasting change.
