Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Lauren Weems of Sandy Springs

We recently had the chance to connect with Lauren Weems and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Lauren, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Who are you learning from right now?
I’ve actually learned a lot from my little sister lately. She’s definitely the risk taker in my family and she’s shown me first hand that you don’t have to settle for a “regular job” if that doesn’t align with you.

If you put in the work and really put a plan in place, you can do anything. Just work hard and ignore the noise. I’m very grateful to her because I’ve been so used to settling in a job and just hoping I’ll find the time to do what I really want later.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Lowray and I’m a Music Producer/DJ/Recording Engineer in Atlanta. I’m currently working on completing 100 songs by the end of the year and I have quite a ways to go but I’m excited to reach that goal!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I used to believe that adults were always right. I used to be so afraid to speak up for myself and I didn’t want to be perceived as disrespectful or even get in trouble for saying how I felt. It took me more time than I’d like to admit that I do have my own voice and that I can speak out against something I don’t like. I learned that my words have power and meaning.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be that you are much smarter than you give yourself credit for. I used to doubt myself and my ability so often because I thought I didn’t know enough or didn’t have anything to contribute. I’m still working through this but I know that I do have a lot to offer and that even if I don’t have all the answers, I can still provide value and offer solutions.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
One thing I think some smart people are getting wrong is that having a degree=credibility. You don’t have to be “book smart” in order to know things and just because you learned things in school doesn’t mean that you are the ultimate source of truth.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I am able to collaborate with creatives through music. Being able to bounce ideas and create something unique by pulling in multiple perspectives is so exhilarating and rewarding.
