Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Patrick Bell

We recently had the chance to connect with Patrick Bell and have shared our conversation below.

Patrick, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
I definitely would because of our passion to build everything right. We are the hardest working company that I know of.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Patrick Bell, owner of City Garden Company in Atlanta and Athens. We design and build outdoor living—modern gardens that align with the architecture and hold up to real life. Our work is intentional and detail-driven; we care about clean structure and interesting materials. We’re proud to have received the Association of Professional Landscape Designers’ 2025 Silver Award for Residential Landscape Design—a huge honor for a local Atlanta firm. Right now we’re producing full-property modern gardens across the city and in Athens, with a clear aim: landscapes that feel considered, look calm, and work every day.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
The crews and trades I’ve worked beside—masons, steel fabricators, grading operators—taught me the most. They showed me that details aren’t abstract and most things are possible.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
failure is a pretty cool thing, if you look at it right.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Making people understand how mighty my company is.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Building a company is very hard work, and I do things every day that will not pay off ever, or maybe if I am lucky, in 7-10 years.
