Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Sargent.
Jasmine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I relocated to Atlanta, Ga from Washington, DC in the middle of pursuing my Master’s Degree in Forensic Psychology. I always knew that I had a passion for acting, and although I minored in Theatre during my undergraduate journey, I was still too afraid to take that leap of faith to pursue acting wholeheartedly. It wasn’t until someone dear to me passed away from Leukemia at such a young age that I realized that life is entirely too short to not be doing something that my heart truly desires. Now, being in Atlanta for a little over two years, I have managed to complete my Masters Degree program all while working on many independent film projects, building my social media following, and booking my first TV show on a major network. I am super excited about my career as an artist and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for me!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This hasn’t been the smoothest journey as it has included several losses, no’s, and reality checks. You have to remember who YOU are at all times because it is so easy to get lost, distracted, and off of track. You have to have faith and you have to rely on it heavily. My advice to anyone who is just starting out or interested in a career in the entertainment industry is to make sure that you’re doing it for the right reasons. It’s not as easy as some may think, and it can also be extremely discouraging to hear more “No’s” than “Yes’s,” especially when your heart is not truly invested. Despite all of the highs and lows that you’ll experience, always remember to stay true to yourself as the growth you’ll experience throughout this entire process can be so fulfilling.
Please tell us about your work.
I make sure that I bring a piece of “Me” to any role, job, or position that I take on regardless of the similarity that it shares with my actual life or not. No one is me and I believe that that’s my secret weapon.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
There are many more opportunities today for women to not only be in front of the camera but behind the camera as well by being directors, producers, editors, and cinematographers.
