Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian “JJ” Simmons.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a radio/tv host, speaker, author and creator of the movement, Respect My Crown. Respect My Crown encourages women to deepen in spirituality, sisterhood, accountability, and service. I’m also the founder of JJ’s I’m Me Foundation that inspires teen girls to be the best version of themselves.
Nothing makes me happier than encouraging and empowering women to live a life that is their best choice, honors their purpose and nurtures their souls. My personal mission is to provide the support that I didn’t have and equip this next generation with tools to be great!
My first book, Without Bruises, is my story and my strategy for getting out of an abusive relationship. During those dark days, I wish I had a daily space to reflect, think about and write out my desires. Having a sacred, dedicated time to express those things may have prevented some of the challenges I experienced. At the very least, I may have spent less time on what I didn’t want and more time enjoying what I wanted most! This is why I wrote Respect My Crown: A 30 -Day Affirmation Journal to Manifest Your Vision and my latest book All Falls Down: A Daily Study of Scripture to Lift You Up When Life Has Knocked You Down.
Has it been a smooth road?
Life has not been a smooth road however I am extremely grateful for the lessons learned. My biggest lesson has been to trust my intuition. It’s the most important piece of advice that I can give a young woman. There’s that feeling in your gut that tells you when something isn’t right or “DON’T DO IT!” Listen to your body! It doesn’t lie to you.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’ve been a Radio/TV personality for over 20 + years working in markets such as NYC, Houston, Indianapolis and more. I just recently joined the on-air team at v103.
I’m also an author and global speaker. My topics include self-esteem, the power of words, women in entertainment, single motherhood and domestic abuse.
I run a non-profit organization called JJ’s I’m Me Foundation – we have an 8-week empowerment program for girls in middle schools and high schools. It includes robotics, healthy cooking, health/fitness, beauty and style, mental health and more.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My experiences from childhood have played a huge role in the person I have become. I watched my mother (a single mother after divorcing my father when I was nine) work very hard to provide for our home. I’m sure I owe my work ethic and hustle to her. My traumatic experiences have helped me to become resilient and develop an ever-growing endurance. My lack of fear growing up has allowed me to become a risk-taker and dream bigger than ever.
