Life & Work with AL Laye of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to AL Laye.

AL, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is AL Laye, also known as actor Norman Wakefield, and I’m originally from New Jersey. Growing up, music and sports were always a major part of my life. As a child, I sang in the church choir, played the saxophone, and wrote poetry. Outside of music, I played basketball and football from the age of five all the way through college.

My journey into entertainment started in 2007 when I appeared on the television series Maury. After that appearance, I was told I received some of the most fan mail in the history of the show, and that really opened a lot of doors for me. Shortly after, I was featured in ESPN and SLAM wearing Dwyane Wade’s very first signature sneaker, and from there my career really started taking off.

Eventually, I moved to Atlanta to work with Tyler Perry. While that opportunity didn’t last long because I felt like I was being placed into a certain box creatively, it still led to more opportunities in television. I went on to work on productions like The Game and Let’s Stay Together, along with several other projects.

As time went on, I became a father to three amazing children, and they changed my life completely. At that point, I decided to step back from entertainment to focus on creating stability and a solid foundation for my family. Once I felt secure in that chapter of my life, I made the decision to return to entertainment full-time — but this time not only as an actor, but also as a recording artist.

I released my first single, “Brown Skin,” and followed it with several more records while I was still searching for my true sound as an artist.

Then, on December 14th, my life changed again after I was involved in a near-fatal car accident that left me with a broken leg. During my recovery, while I was unable to walk, I found my sound and a deeper connection to my music. That experience inspired me to write my single “MY MY.” Creating upbeat music during one of the hardest moments of my life helped keep me mentally grounded and motivated while I fought through recovery.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has never been a smooth one. It’s been filled with challenges, setbacks, and life-changing moments that forced me to grow both personally and professionally.

At one point, I was focused on college football and excited about my future, but everything changed after appearing on Maury over a child that ultimately was not mine. That situation cost me my scholarship and completely shifted the direction of my life.

Years later, I discovered that I did have a son — but I didn’t find out until he was 13 years old. Processing that emotionally while trying to build a relationship was another major turning point in my life.

I also went through a very public and difficult chapter while dating Kai Morae, the daughter of LisaRaye McCoy. During that relationship, we experienced a miscarriage, and later the situation became public again through Queens Court Season 2 on Bravo, which added even more pressure to an already painful experience.

Then, on December 14, 2025, I survived a near-fatal car accident that changed my life once again. I broke my leg in five places and had to go through the difficult process of learning how to walk again. That experience tested me mentally, physically, and emotionally, but it also gave me a new perspective on life, purpose, and my music.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an artist, performer, and entertainer focused on creating music that connects with people on a real level. I specialize in blending melodic vibes, catchy hooks, and authentic storytelling into records that can move a crowd but still feel personal. My sound pulls from hip-hop, R&B, and melodic rap influences, and I’m known for bringing energy, emotion, and versatility to every track and performance.

What I’m most proud of is building my brand and audience through consistency, hard work, and staying true to myself. Every project, performance, and release represents growth—not just as an artist, but as a person. I take pride in creating music people can relate to, whether they’re celebrating, healing, grinding, or just trying to escape for a moment.

What sets me apart is my ability to create records that feel both commercial and genuine at the same time. I don’t try to sound like anyone else—I focus on making timeless music with real emotion behind it. I also bring a strong work ethic, creativity, and vision to everything I do, from the music itself to performances, visuals, branding, and connecting with fans.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
One of the best things about Atlanta is the abundance of Black excellence, entrepreneurship, and the countless opportunities for growth and success. The city continues to inspire ambition, innovation, and cultural influence across many industries.

At the same time, one of the challenges Atlanta faces is the lack of unity and genuine community support without underlying motives. There is still room for stronger collaboration, authentic connections, and collective empowerment within our communities.
