Life & Work with Amber Dawn Bowyer of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Dawn Bowyer.

Hi Amber Dawn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Eldest Daughter of seven siblings with a mama that died before my sixth birthday, preserving memories and absorbing stories became a passion throughout my childhood and adolescence. In many ways I think I was chasing her memory. During my early 20’s I was given a wee canon point and shoot that I used during Culinary School at Southeast Culinary & Hospitality College in Bristol, TN and also whilst working the Bristol Motor Speedway cooking and serving in the suites above the track. After securing my culinary degree I took that little camera with me to Europe for my aupair adventure and became obsessed with documenting my adventures capturing the beauty and wonder of my travels.

Once my work visa ended and I had to return to the states I decided to come to Atlanta to establish residency and then began classes at the Art Institute of Atlanta Fall 2010. I really wanted to pursue a degree in photographic Imaging and I was able to complete that and graduate summer of 2013. Worked various freelance jobs through Dignity Cemeteries, Georgia Aquarium, and Cady whilst also pursuing my own passion projects on the side. During the fall of 2017 I became a stay at home mama of twins and began building my photography business Seabrook Bowyer Imagery. I had previously been known as Dawn Seabrook Photography however it was now important to include my babies under that should they ever decide to also pick up the camera one day.

Since then I have worked and collaborated with local artists around Atlanta and I’ve enjoyed working with the cosplay community through various DragonCon or Markstercon events. It’s wild to look back on it all but I’ve been actively taking photographs for 20 years now since getting that little Canon point and shoot in 2006!! Nowadays you can find me browsing a garden path and stalking the insects, or exploring some local history with my boys, I am beginning to branch out more towards hearth & home content through my Nostalgic Modernist page and art through Amber Dawn Anomalies. It’s all connected. I’ve always enjoyed capturing real moments and thinking how would others want these memories preserved or what vision are they trying to create?

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oof, no it has not been a smooth road. Much suffering with many bumps and derailments along the way, however I would not change it because those lessons had to be learned. The art world is wild.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to think there is a special something about my work that perhaps gives the viewer time to pause and linger a moment longer. Whether its something a bit odd or just slightly off enough to make the viewer desire more.

Currently I am more known for my fantasy portrait work with the Mushroom Fae/Circus Llamas and other cosplayers. When I’m not exploring with my family, I enjoy capturing senior & graduate portraits, as well as weddings and birthdays.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
The ancestors and the universe have guided and protected my life and I am so deeply grateful. There have been some awful moments but also so much that has been deeply wonderful. It all creates a beautiful life and gives one the perspective needed to continue living and thriving, hopefully helping others to live as well. We need the light and the shadows.
