Today we’d like to introduce you to Arial Shelby.
Hi Arial, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a small-town Black woman from Florence, Alabama, but my story is much bigger than the place where it began. I am the oldest of six children, two younger sisters and three younger brothers, and from an early age, I understood the importance of responsibility, leadership, and setting an example. My life has been shaped by the sacrifices of strong family members who poured into me long before I understood the impact they would have on my future. I am the product of a resilient, hardworking single Black mother who dedicated her life to ensuring that her children had everything they needed. Growing up, I watched my mother work multiple jobs to provide a comfortable life for our family. Her determination taught me the value of hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. While she carried the weight of raising six children, she never allowed our circumstances to define our possibilities. Instead, she constantly reminded us that education was a pathway to opportunity and that we were capable of achieving anything we set our minds to.
Alongside my mother, my grandparents played a vital role in shaping the woman I am today. My grandmother devoted more than twenty-five years of her life to healthcare, serving others with compassion and excellence. Watching her care for people planted the seeds of service within me. My grandfather, a retired blue-collar worker and preacher, taught me the importance of faith, integrity, and leading with purpose. Together, my grandparents showed me what it meant to live a life grounded in hard work, humility, and service to others.
Due to their influence, I developed a deep hunger for knowledge and opportunity. I became what many would call a “nerd”—always curious, always asking questions, and always eager to learn. Throughout my childhood and adolescence, I challenged myself academically by taking advanced courses, joining organizations, and seeking opportunities for growth. I knew that education would not only create opportunities for me, but it would also allow me to create a better life for the people I love.
That passion followed me into higher education. I began my undergraduate journey at the University of Alabama before transferring to Stillman College. The transition proved to be one of the most transformative decisions of my life. At Stillman, I found a close-knit community that nurtured my growth both academically and personally. There, I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management while embracing countless opportunities for leadership and service.
My undergraduate experience was filled with achievements that reflected my commitment to excellence. I was inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success and became involved with the NAACP. I joined Virtuous Elite as a Spring 2022 Initiate and later served as both Social Media Director and President of the Executive Board. I became involved with Blacks in Government, served as a Center for Financial Advancement Scholar and Ambassador, worked as a #StillWell Peer Health Educator, served as Secretary of the Campus Wellness Program, Treasurer of the Psychology Club, and participated as a Williams Institute Scholar. Along the way, I completed three years of Spanish studies and continuously sought opportunities that would help me grow as a leader and servant of my community.
While earning my degree, I discovered something that would ultimately change the trajectory of my life: a passion for holistic medicine, herbal remedies, and addressing health concerns at their root cause. I became fascinated by the connection between science, nature, and healing. I began exploring how natural therapies, preventative care, and evidence-based holistic approaches could improve quality of life and empower individuals to take charge of their health. What started as curiosity soon evolved into a calling.
Today, I am pursuing a Master of Science in Biotechnology with a concentration in Medical Cannabis Therapeutics and am expected to graduate in December. Through this program, I have expanded my understanding of biotechnology, research, cannabinoid science, and innovative approaches to healthcare. My studies have strengthened my belief that the future of medicine lies in integrating scientific innovation with holistic and patient-centered care. As I prepare for graduation, my journey is far from complete. My next goal is to attend naturopathic medical school while simultaneously working as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant and contributing to biotechnology research. I want to continue learning, growing, and serving while building the foundation for my future career as a physician.
Ultimately, my vision extends beyond earning degrees and professional titles. After becoming a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, I plan to establish my own holistic wellness center dedicated to helping individuals heal physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. My goal is to create a space where patients are treated as whole people rather than collections of symptoms. I envision combining evidence-based natural medicine, biotechnology, preventative care, health education, and compassionate patient advocacy to transform lives and strengthen communities.
Everything I hope to accomplish traces back to the lessons I learned in Florence, Alabama. The sacrifices of my mother, the wisdom of my grandparents, and the love of my family continue to inspire me every day. Their resilience became my foundation. Their faith became my motivation. Their belief in me became the fuel that carried me through every challenge and every achievement.
My story is not simply about earning degrees or building a career. It is about honoring the legacy of those who came before me while creating opportunities for those who come after me. It is about breaking barriers as a first-generation college graduate, pursuing excellence in science and medicine, and dedicating my life to helping others heal.
From a small-town girl with big dreams to an aspiring physician, researcher, entrepreneur, and healer, my journey is proof that where you start does not determine where you can go. I am living evidence that resilience, education, faith, and purpose can transform a dream into a destiny. And this is only the beginning.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, battling various challenges such as:
– Low/Middle Class Upbringing
– First-Generation Navigation of College
– Transferring from PWI or HBCU
– Covid during Bachelors Degree
– Discovering true purpose
– Balancing academic/professional life with social/personal life: creating personal brand, modeling, etc. and separating it from career goals
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an aspiring ND, Entrepreneur, and creative intellect. I’m most proud of my academic achievements, as well as personal growth. I not only accomplish various things within the science realm, and want to create personalized medicine, but I am also a creative that expresses myself freely. I want to show people that nothing is truly impossible. You can be and achieve EVERYTHING you desire in this life, no matter what resources may be in reach or where you are in the world.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a popular introvert, always internally goal oriented and focused on school, but surrounded by everyone even if I traveled alone. I am the type to relate to all people no matter the background or personality, and create a safe space for all that encounter me. Although my interests were things like Future Business Leaders of America, Spanish Club, I also loved spontaneous fun with friends, traveling, and making memories. Although a naturally shy kid, I did show choir from 4th-12th grade, popping out my of shell with choreography and alto harmonies during shows.
