Life & Work with Brucie Bruce of Old Fourth Ward

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brucie Bruce.

Brucie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The short: journaling was my first creative outlet, which led to learning guitar & songwriting. And when there were no more words but still feeling all the feels, drawing. These days I work that sequence backwards.

Many moons later I was offered an opportunity to learn to tattoo. I couldn’t pack my bags fast enough. I was living in England working as an electrician. I left everything: relationship, belongings, job, and flew back to America. Spring of 2019 I started my apprenticeship in Norfolk, Va. Late summer 2020 I moved to Atlanta for an opportunity to work at my current shop SparrowHawk in O4W.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly it was the easiest decision and the hardest execution. Nothing’s been untouched. Feels like a dream and I’m just waking up – getting to *actually* know myself, learning to tame my dragon & trust my instincts (work in progress).

All that said I feel very lucky I was presented this opportunity and once I really really believed it would work, things seemed to fall into place.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a tattoo artist (who sometimes likes to paint & play guitar). I enjoy working with abstract concepts. I’m most proud of going all-in and seeing it through. (I think) my surreal/trippy vibe sets me apart. When I’m not dabbling in something creative, you’ll find me strolling thru the neighborhood with my dog Pootie or getting out on the water in my kayak.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Inheriting my dad’s old guitar and learning to play. Turned out to be very therapeutic and got me through some weird years.
