Life & Work with Cora Rogers of Other / Not Applicable

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cora Rogers.

Hi Cora, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved film and TV. I’m a comedy writer and filmmaker who is based in Savannah. I am about to graduate from SCAD with a BFA in Film/TV with a minor in dramatic writing. In the third grade, I wrote a short story and had the librarian publish it in the school library. I think that was the moment I knew I wanted to write for the rest of my life. The love for comedy came from endless hours of Robin Williams ‘ stand-up and Chris Farley on SNL. My mom showed me the sketch “Van Down by the River,” and I don’t think I’ve been the same since. Writing comedy is incredibly difficult, which makes the challenge of it so much more rewarding. I once thought I would be a lawyer, then a teacher, and once thought I’d go to cosmetology school.. I think there was fear that loomed over this particular dream; however, once I went for it, I don’t think now that I could have done anything else.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not… I am definitely my biggest critic, and with what I do, there’s a ton of self-doubt that comes with it. I’ve also learned from being on set that it’s incredibly physically and mentally draining. But this work is addictive. Making movies, writing television episodes, and getting a joke just right makes it all worth it. I think I have the determination and love for this industry that’s needed when it’s the one industry that fights you. To get a million no’s for a single yes isn’t for the weak.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sure! I mainly write comedy tv and films. I recently shot a film I wrote and Directed called, “I’m the Worst.” I’ve also got an ensemble comedy in post-production nearing premier called “When the Curtain Falls.” I think I’m most proud of this most recent script for my film, I’m the Worst. It was based on my real life if you can believe it… and I feel its resolve is the strongest I’ve captured thus far in my career. I think what sets me apart is my style. I have a knack for absurdist comedies; think Austin Powers, and I feel in the modern day we need a bit more of that.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I hope it goes back to prioritizing original content. We need to breathe new life into our media. We need young voices to better tell the stories we actually experience as the generation that was the first to be completely immersed in social media,
