Today we’d like to introduce you to David Pinkston.
Hi David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Syracuse, New York, I grew up with my father, mother and older sister in the home. My family showed me daily what it takes to keep a family together. This very thought was going to be test March 25,1992. I was involved in a really bad car accident at nine years old. I broke my right knee and my left ankle. I was hit by a plumbing van full of equipment. I was going across the street to catch my bus for school. I seen the van coming, but I thought it was going to stop because on my side of the street. Everybody has stopped because of the school bus and having their lights on the school bus so you know everybody’s supposed to stop, but this gentlemen with his plumbing van did not stop. He supposedly was already late for an appointment. The truck hit me. I went very far up in the air.The reason why I bring this up is because my family surrounded me would support and love and faith. I always had a representation, not just in the four walls of the church, but in the four walls of my home. We weren’t rich, but both of my parents were very hard, and my sister was like a second mother to me. I always had a great example of my father, though. He was the one that pushed me so hard to be the man that I am today, I endured a lot of pain during the season of learning how to walk again it was terrible. I stayed in the middle of my parents living room for almost 2 years before I could go up and down the stairs of my home I had to endure rigorous physical therapy for about 2 1/2 years. I went through depression and anxiety that didn’t have language for it at that time because I was adolescent and I didn’t understand what those things meant. We we grew up in a very, very strict apostolic background, and that was my foundation to love God be holy and righteous, and live the best life that you could. I knew that that was my foundation, but it wasn’t going to be who I am who I was going to be. I knew that there was something more inside of me and my sister would push me constantly and tell me that I have more. Not to settle for what’s around me but to go after what was in me and let it come out and help others be the best that they can. I always believe in family because my father was such a family man and he kept our family together even through his own personal sicknesses and situations with his body he always simplify what it meant to be a great husband to be a great father and a great provider. Growing up, seeing a man of his statue, be humble enough to submit himself under leadership at church and be a community leader and a leader of his home really impact in my life. I always wanted others to get a glimpse of how my father raised us to be very strong individuals and love God with all of our heart we didn’t just go to church. We had a relationship with God and I have that relationship with God till this day. My journey to become who people will see one day wasn’t easy. I didn’t like myself.. I didn’t think I was the greatest person at all, but I knew I had a big heart. I knew that there was something a little different about me in the way that I think the way that I reacted in the way, I talked. What am I trying to say? I knew I could feel certain things about people that other people couldn’t feel and I didn’t know what to make of it, but I knew that I cared about people very dearly. I come to found out that I had a Pastor‘s heart. I really want to see people changed. I want to see families changed. I’m saying all this because my father, my mother and my sister, my family was my cornerstone. There is amplified what it really means to be a tight family, and I owe it all to God, my parents and my sister. My sister was my rock. She did a lot of molding, correcting and pouring in when my father couldn’t and he was dealing with cancer and his body two or three times in his lifetime. She would tell me about being a Blackman in this world and how I really needed to step up and finish my education how I had to learn the ways of the world protect my mind, protect my ears and protect my sight and protect myself from people that don’t love how I look I stand before you today, a healed man, a healed son, a healed brother, and a healed leader.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has been a smooth road for me at all. Like I stated before my car accident was a big one while I was recuperating. I lost an Uncle of mine that I loved the early and I couldn’t even go to his funeral. My father was done with his first body of cancer. My house was in an uproar we almost lost him almost died a few times on the operating table. . My house was in a uproar we almost lost him almost died a few times on the operating table. I didn’t know what to think at that time. I did not know how my family would be able to recuperate if my father had passed at that time. People thought that everything was perfect in our household, but it wasn’t there were arguments. There were disagreements. Even though there was a lot of love and respect, I always didn’t feel like I was accepted outside of my house all the time a lot of my problems stem from Church even though I had an amazing Pastor there were times that I did not feel like it was good enough for him and others. It’s so very weird and loving situation. It took me a long time to realize that unintentionally they had rules that I just did not agree with. Even though they loved me and my family I never felt like I really fully fit what they wanted me to be I assume learn that who God made me to be wasn’t just for them, but it was for the world I bring all of these pieces of my life into this conversation because I didn’t love myself. I didn’t like myself. Practically there were times that I hated myself there were times that I wanted to commit suicide there were times that I wanted to run away. Wasn’t because I was abused or neglected, neglected myself. I sold myself short because I did not believe in who I was so I walked around playing drums at the church singing at the church doing things in school, but never fully happy. I just didn’t feel like I was good enough. I just didn’t feel like I was great to do anything purpose to do anything even though my family or my biggest supporters I didn’t believe it. I didn’t believe that I could do anything right so I suffered in silence for years when I would get picked last, never first never second never third option what that last for sports for music for leadership in Church. It was a very trying time for me, but nobody knew because I didn’t tell anyone. I smiled what I was hurting inside. I attended church, but didn’t even want to be there at times.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As I stated to you before I started out as a coaching entrepreneur because I’ll always want others to do well. I want families and individuals and youth to excel. I wanted them to see their own potential. I wanted them to grow with no limits. I want individuals to be the best person that they could be no matter the odds. I started working with individuals and from individuals. I started working on what families and now I started working with Fathers and their families. I saw that Fathers did not have a place where they can feel safe to talk about some internal issues. Fathers did not have a space in a place where they feel honored, respected, and heard I wanted to create a very special movement that was father driven, father, focused, and father approved. I did not want to just have events. I want Fathers to change. I want Fathers to believe in themselves. Most of all I want Fathers to heal. I want Fathers to be able to encourage one another and see that their circumstances, their situations are not unique. There are other fathers that might be dealing with something similar to what they might be experiencing. I wanted Fathers to believe that they can be healed from their own trauma so that they can be better fathers for their families. So my specification is father healing family, healing community restoration and partnerships and establishing legacy. I’m known for being in the family man. It’s more than a title. It’s everyday responsibility that you have to be ready for. But I’ll be honest there were things that I had to experience that I was not ready for I had to take the responsibility to make myself ready. I wanna help Fathers all walks of life find their way to become the best father and family man for their family most proud of taking a step on Faith listening to the voice of God and him showing me the best part of me is gonna help someone see the best part of them. I want God‘s name to be glorified. I want to take care of my family financially and build something great for them for my legacy but most important I want God‘s need him to be glorified and everything that I do what sets me apart is I want Fathers to understand how going back to the basics talking communicating with your family, having games, movie nights and special time designated for family time is important.
