Today we’d like to introduce you to DeAnna Carson.

Hi DeAnna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello Voyage ATL readers. My Name is DeAnna Carson and I am the Owner and sole Cake Artist of Greedy Sweets by DeAnna, LLC. I was born and raised in the best city in the entire world, “ATLANTA”. I received my B.S. degree in Hospitality Management from the great Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL. I also received my M.B.A. in Human resources from Capella University. I love all things hospitality. My main goal has always been to provide a service that would leave a lasting impression and keep my customers/clients coming back. To my surprise, my love for baking has led me to an amazing career in the Baking Industry. In 2014, I started my baking journey. I catered my mother’s 50th Birthday celebration. That was my very first event and it gave me a great deal of pride knowing that my desserts were well received. From there, the passion for baking and creating custom cakes was ignited.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey has not been a smooth road for me. When I first started, I assumed popping open a box of Duncan Hines, reading the directions and slapping some icing on the finished product couldn’t be that hard. I was sadly mistaken. I soon found out that baking was an art and measuring ingredients properly mattered. Being that I wasn’t formally trained in this field, I had to learn by attending the world’s best university, “YouTube University”. I was basically winging it. Baking was originally a hobby to me. Little did I know, my passion for baking turned from a hobby into a business. Along the way, I’ve taken the necessary steps and spent countless dollars and hours on obtaining the right education. This has helped me tremendously because I now have the knowledge that will not only make me a better cake artist but also help me grow my business.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a custom Cake Artist here in Atlanta, GA. I specialize in treats for every occasion. This includes custom cakes, gourmet cupcakes and treats. I am most known for my Strawberry Crunch and Banana Pudding Cupcakes. These are my most sought-after desserts. I never get tired of making them. I am most proud of my journey from 2014 to present because I can now see how far I’ve come. One thing for certain, cake pictures don’t lie. I had the potential but lacked the skill set to be at my very best. I can honestly say that I was charging people to practice on their cakes. Horrible right? I learned the hard way that each cake is a representation of me. I practice and perfect on my own dime, not my clients. I’ve made it my business to invest into my craft and soak up all the information I can. In 2021, I can finally say that I am yielding an amazing return on my investment. For me to continue to grow and create my own path in this industry, I must always treat my business like a business and not like a hobby.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a quiet child. I stayed to myself for the most part. If I wasn’t in my room playing my Clarinet, watching B.A.P.S or Sister Act II, I could be found in the kitchen with my mom when she cooked. I was her little sidekick. In my household, my mother gave me the freedom (within reason) to be as creative as I wanted to when it comes to cooking. Her only rule was, “DON’T WASTE MY FOOD!” This gave me the opportunity to tap into my inner Julia Childs and create something special for my Mommy and Sisters.
