Life & Work with Donisha Hill of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donisha Hill.

Hi Donisha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story starts with very humble beginnings, being born to very young parents in Southern California. San Diego to be exact. I was always a tall kid and around middle school I started to really develop and also gain weight. With that came jokes and comments about my size. Which lead me into believing I wasn’t “beautiful” in society eyes. I carried those feelings into my teenage years, until I met a girl, who is still my friend today by the name of Danielle Walker who was really the first person to tell me I was beautiful. She said it with such conviction I had no choice but to believe her. Although years of bully didn’t just snap away with one compliment. My life change when I was able to choose who I was around and my own environment, once out of high school. I did a lot of self healing and my confidence started to grow. I became more self aware and started to see my beauty for what it was. I always knew I wanted to be in the entertainment industry and I thought I was going to manage other people careers and really get them to the level they wanted to achieve. I was always uplifting them and scouting for new talent. But I always was saying to myself that, “I was the brand.” And everything that I was doing for them, I needed to do for myself. But I was continuously invested my time and efforts into others. And one day I decided to put all the energy I was giving others into myself. So while washing dishes one Saturday morning and listening to Steve Harvey he posed a question. “What’s one thing you have and can do right now to make money that’s free to you?” And I answered. I remember vividly, my hands stopped washed dishes, and my head cocked slightly to the right and I responded, “beauty.” Shortly after, by chance a post came across my timeline seeking models. It said what to wear, where to be and what time to be there. And I showed up. My first casting I was nervous and excited and didn’t know what to expect. But when I stepped on the runway all eyes were on me, and just like that I became a model!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road was actually very smooth. I tell people all the time modeling came to me at I time when I needed community the most. I had recently lost my best friend in a very tragic accident and I was devastated. I needed women around me that had dreams and aspirations who were very ambitious and had a positive outlook on life, women who believed in themselves and believed in me too! Without them I don’t know where I would be today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Professionally I have been in the transportation field for 16 years. I started at the airport driving the fuel trucks that fueled international flights. And I fell in love with the independence of the position and the physical challenges the position offered as well. I am currently a school bus driver for Atlanta Public Schools in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Atlanta that is currently being gentrified. The community still suffers from long abuse of poverty, struggle and drug use. I deal with a mixture of children and my main focus I instill in them is self awareness, self discipline and being kind to one another. My kids are not allowed to talk negatively about each other or use negative language. I am teaching them to stick together and I praise them for getting good grades. I’m hard on them when I need to be and I also offer them grace when it’s needed as well. I don’t look for them to be perfect, but I do expect for them to be coachable and respectable.
