Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine McNair.
Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I moved to Atlanta nine years ago from Connecticut, I came with a plan to follow my dreams. At the time, I wasn’t even truly sure what that dream was I just knew I didn’t want to work for anyone but myself. I was a single mother at the time so following my dreams weren’t my first priority because I needed to provide for my two sons. I was desperate to make money so I got a job through a temp agency working as a server/housekeeping and a part-time job pouring coffee at Dunkin Donuts. I didn’t even a car to get to work so I would either walk or take the marta.
During my time working at the temp agency, I was sent to different hotels throughout Atlanta. I loved it. I loved meeting new people and being around people with money but it made me feel so small.
One day I was sent on a job to a retirement home for active seniors in Sandy Springs. The job was to fill in for the housekeepers at the facility who were on vacation for a week.
The job was awesome. I was cleaning, something I always loved to do since I was a kid. My grandmother was the ultimate cleaner, as a kid I remember her mopping her walls.
Because of my hard work and dedication, I was offered a full-time position as a housekeeper. Within a year, I was the housekeeping supervisor. The following year I was cleaning privately for many of the residents in the building and also for their families and friends outside of the building.
I decided it was time for me to finally start positioning myself for the dream of being my own boss. I finally figured out what I was really good at and actually loved.
I started Royalty Cleaning LLC in 2018. With years of hard work, learning, being told no a lot, spending money before making it, and building client relationships I now work completely for myself and have two employees, working to hire more in the near future. I am a certified cleaner now specializing in Airbnb and commercial properties throughout metro Atlanta.
I am currently enrolled in a cleaning course right now to become certified as a cleaning trainer. I would love to now teach others how to become certified cleaners. I soon plan to host cleaning boot camps for those who are thinking of starting their own cleaning business or just need help with cleaning in their homes on their own.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the business of cleaning, you must build strong trusting relationships. Clients are allowing you into their personal spaces including their homes and businesses, so professionalism and trust are key things I had to work on when I first started. In the beginning, I was really trying to build a clientele so I had extremely low pricing. I had to learn that I was providing a service with a lot of physical labor so I had to come up with a way to figure out pricing. It was actually a client who pulled me to the side one day and asked me why was I charging her so low. Al I could say was because it’s fair, she responded well how fair is it to you? I learned then my worth and I’ve since attracted clients who don’t mind spending the right money on a service that some say is a form of self-care.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am proud to be a housekeeper. I truly enjoy what I do but I think it’s the real relationships I build with my clients that set me aside from other cleaners. I take pride in creating healthy relationships and working hard to keep them my clients. A lot of people are embarrassed when it’s time to hire a cleaner, I love to ensure them and make them comfortable in their decision. I love finishing a job and the look on a client’s face of relief and satisfaction, it truly warms my heart.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I plan on being a housekeeping trainer helping others to learn the benefits of being in a clean space and to bring awareness on how to clean with more holistic cleaners like vinegar instead of bleach.
