Life & Work with Jentoria Lee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jentoria Lee.

Hi Jentoria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a young girl, I was very insecure about my appearance. I weighed around 90lbs, my hair barely touched my shoulders, and I had terrible acne. I come from a family of women who could do hair, but at the time, I did not know how to do my own. My mom and aunts stayed doing my hair in different styles, but as time passed and I got older, they eventually became tired, and it was my time to learn. It took me a long time to learn how to do my hair. I’ll get frustrated and start crying, have breakdowns, and want to cut my hair off. But eventually, I started getting the hang of it. After school, I would practice for hours in the mirror slicking a ponytail and trying different styles in my hair. And I remember at the time, I was obsessed with edges. I mean I had to have all the swoops and swirls. It needed to be dramatic because I felt it made the style look better. It wasn’t until I found myself and what I like, how I wanted to look, and how I wanted to be viewed that everything changed for me. Once I became ok with myself and set my goal of becoming the version of myself that makes me most happy, I did just that. And I continue to do just that every day, no matter what. I went natural for about a little over a year and started learning about my hair. I learned my hair type, porosity, what products work, and how my hair reacts to different things. Most importantly, I learned to love my hair. After, I started making hair tutorials on youtube, sharing what I learned, and promoting my channel on Instagram. Then I discovered TikTok and saw a short hair tutorial, so I decided to make one, and the tutorial went viral. My social account started growing fastly daily, and I started creating more content. Hair companies begin reaching out, asking me to promote their hair, and as I’m continuing to grow, I plan to work with larger companies and create my own.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t believe it has ever been a smooth road for anybody. Every day we are faced with obstacles rather it’s getting out the bed or needing motivation. I’m no different. However, I am lucky enough to have people around me to motivate me and lift me when I’m down. But it all leads to me having to push myself in the end. Starting from nothing and slowly molding it into greatness takes support, hard work, dedication, and lots of self-discipline. A lot of time, I lacked the motivation to keep posting content, interacting with others, networking, and overall being active. I was getting drained so easily because not only was I trying to create content, but I’m also a full-time college student, trying to open two businesses, work a full-time job, and still make time for family and friends. And that alone was and is a lot to juggle. I’m self-motivated, but sometimes I need a reminder that I’m on the right path and have to take it easy on myself. I’m very determined to be the woman I aspire to be, so I stress myself out by making sure I’m doing everything I can to get there. I’m still on this journey, and it still gets bumpy, like I recently got sick and was hospitalized, my car broke down, and so forth; but I always have to remind myself this isn’t the end of my road and to keep going after what I want. When dealing with social media, it can be a lot, everyone haves opinions and feelings and come from different backgrounds. Many may not like what you’re doing, but others may love it. I used to let the negative comments and mentions get to me, but I had to learn to shift my focus from the negative people to the positive people. Those positive supportive people are the reason I’m still uploading content and trying to grow larger today. No journey is easy, but you have to make the best of it and keep going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create hair content on social media, showcasing different styles, including natural styles, wigs, weaves, headband wigs, and everything hair-related. My content is short self-explanatory hair tutorials and hair-related videos. I recently started uploading lifestyle content, but a majority of my following are people interested in hair. I am most proud that my content has impacted many to learn and love their hair, as well as to style it and save some coins. I share hair growth tips and things I learned/know about hair to help those who may feel insecure about there’s like I did. The best part is receiving messages of people thanking me for the tips I shared, a tutorial I did, or just how they enjoyed my content.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I love to read and listen to podcasts that motivate me to keep moving forward in life. The Slay Girl Slay podcast by Ashley Leggs is by far the best motivational podcast ever created. In every episode, I can relate to an aspect of my life that she talks about, and she helps me maneuver through them. Although it’s a podcast, and I don’t speak directly to her, what she talks about speaks directly to me. Sometimes I go back and replay the episode just to hear it again because it is that good. I found it crazy that I don’t know this woman or how I came across her podcast, but she spoke to me and helped change me.
