Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamesha Shropshire.
Hi Kamesha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Throughout the years, I have been blessed enough to try different things until I found my true purpose. Some people may know me as Ms. Kamesha the singer, or the motivational speaker/author, or fitness trainer or the owner of “The Female Plugs”. God blessed me with many talents and a testimony to inspire people all over the world…
I have always known that I had a gift, but I never knew what my purpose was… Growing up, my mama always told me I could be anything I wanted to be, just be the best at it. By the time I was 8, I was entering into drawing contest and church solo’s. I was raised in a singing church family, and my mama who is also a vocalist started training me vocally at a very young age!
My story can be so long, lol so I’m going to skip a lot to touch on what’s most important. I wrote and recorded my first song at 12. From the ages 15 to 25, no one could tell me I wasn’t about to be the next R&B superstar. I auditioned for American Idol, Making the band, touring and opening up for big name celebrities all over. I was getting my name out, even had local radio play.
In 2009 my life changed and it’s never been the same. I was diagnosed with GBS, a paralysis that runs from your feet to your brain… I was left paralyzed from the waist down, eventually losing all mobility, not even being able to write my name. The doctors said it was a possibility I wouldn’t walk again or have children. After processing everything, I started focusing on what I could do instead of what I couldn’t do. While in my wheelchair I started a YouTube channel and began singing request videos with over 280,000 views to date. I also wrote and recorded my first mixtape and produced my first documentary of my journey learning to walk again.
I never imagined the impact the documentary would have on others. During that time, I had started walking with assistance. I would either use my crutches or cane. I had gained so much weight bc of the steroids, and I felt uncomfortable in the skin I was in. I was also determined to prove the doctors wrong, so I started going to the gym. My legs got stronger in the weight was falling off. So many people would message me, saying how I inspired them and they were about to give up until they watched my documentary. People started asking me about my weight loss and I became inspired. I wanted to help someone the way I was helped. Still not 100%, I started attending ISSA online and became a certified trainer…
After I became certified, I started my fitness business offering one on one and group training. At the time, I couldn’t run or jump, so I focused on the fitness I could teach, helping hundreds of women. Things were going well, and then I received the best news ever… I found out I was pregnant, spending many weeks in the hospital, but still grateful, I had overcome what the doctors said was impossible… My son’s name is Destin because he was truly destined to be here.
After I overcame some of the biggest obstacles of my life, I wanted to help others, so I wrote my first book, went to Canada to promote it, and became inspired by the black children’s book, came home and wrote my own. I remember trying to purchase custom shirts but couldn’t afford them due to minimum. Always loving art, I bought a heatpress machine with my taxes to make my own shirts. People liked my work and started asking me to do shirts. And with word of mouth, it became my full-time job and “The Female Plugs” was born.
I came up with the name bc in the urban community “The Plug” has what you need for a good price, or they can get it. I’m blessed with so many talents and if I don’t know how to do it, I can point you in the right direction. I never wanted to be put it a box. I wanted to create my own lane.
June 2022 will be my six years anniversary for “The Female Plugs” and the launch of the rebrand. I’m extremely excited to finally get out of my own way. I currently customize: shirts, bags, apparel, logos, websites, custom party supplies and so much more. I can’t wait until the launch to show everyone what I’ve been working on. I’m just getting started, and I can only imagine what God has planned for me in this next season of my life, so stay tuned!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggle was losing my identity once I became paralyzed. My love changed drastically. It’s like one minute you’re independent, to now someone is having to bathe you.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Singing will always be my first passion! I post singing videos from time to time and I’m currently working on a home studio. However, Custom shirts, logos and websites pays the bills.
