Today we’d like to introduce you to Riki Prosper.
Hi Riki, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always enjoyed art. My mom was a photographer who was always messing with photoshop when I was a kid. I remember her photoshopping my friends and I on Batman and friends for a birthday invitation and I was so hyped. I always took art classes in school, but when I took my first graphic design class sophomore year of high school, I was hooked. I started making album covers for friends and even started a “t-shirt company.” I would get done with my graphic design work early, and we were lucky enough to have a screen printer in the classroom. I’ve always enjoyed making art and designs for people. From winning t-shirt design contests to making art that Lil Nas X shared on his page, it always makes me happy to see my work out there in the universe.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve definitely had an easier road then a lot of people out there but like many people, I struggle with anxiety and depression. Of course, there’s the occasional hiccup, ups and downs but it doesn’t feel fair to complain about my life when I’ve been so lucky so many times and had so many great people to help me along but just know you’re not alone.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m still figuring out what my specialty is but I really enjoy mocking up designs and art. I make all my art in photoshop. I enjoying using familiar styles and motifs to create new and interesting content. I like designing things that I think would be awesome in real life. I really enjoy mixing my interests of music, collectible art toys, skateboarding, anime, and shoes. I’m really proud of the Lil Nas X artwork I made and he shared, but the one piece of art that come to mind is fan art I did of Mac Miller before he passed, where he actually liked the post. He’s always been an inspiration to me so it meant a lot for him to reach out. I think what sets me apart from other artists is the vision I have and ability to make it into reality once I have the idea.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
My mom made my middle name Prosper, which is an old French name that means lucky and I think she knew what she was doing haha. I’ve gotten really lucky with the opportunities I’ve gotten as well as all the awesome people who have helped me out.
