Life & Work with Rob & Javan Malloy of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob & Javan Malloy.

Hi Rob & Javan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Pops & Son Conversations began with something simple: a father and son having conversations that a lot of families either avoid or never get around to having.
We come from two different generations, with different experiences, perspectives, and ways of looking at the world. Naturally, we don’t always agree. But somewhere in those disagreements, we recognized that there was something valuable in the conversations themselves. We realized that if we were willing to listen to each other, challenge each other, and occasionally admit when we were wrong, other fathers and sons might benefit from hearing those exchanges.
What started as an opportunity to strengthen our own relationship developed into something much bigger.
We officially launched Pops & Son Conversations in January 2024, creating a platform where we could discuss fatherhood, relationships, manhood, mental health, finances, entrepreneurship, and the issues affecting our communities. We wanted our conversations to be honest, entertaining, and occasionally uncomfortable because those are usually the conversations that matter most.
But we’ve never wanted Pops & Son to be just another podcast. From the beginning, we envisioned a network that could connect people, create opportunities, and encourage families to communicate beyond the surface.
Our backgrounds contribute to that vision in different ways. Rob is a veteran, author, coach, and community advocate who has spent years working to empower others. Javan is a writer, poet, and creative entrepreneur who brings a younger perspective, along with a willingness to question ideas that previous generations may have accepted without much discussion.
Together, we’ve been able to take those differences and turn them into our greatest strength.
Since launching, we’ve expanded our presence through digital media, community initiatives, youth engagement, and live events. One of our most significant accomplishments has been creating the Esteemed Gents League (EGL), an initiative focused on community engagement, mentorship, and bringing people together through shared experiences.
We’ve also developed and hosted our Fashion Experiences, expanding these events beyond Atlanta to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Minnesota, with additional locations planned for the future. These experiences have allowed us to connect with people from different communities, celebrate creativity and individuality, and create opportunities for people to showcase their talents.
What began as conversations between a father and son has evolved into a growing platform that connects people across communities and generations.
For us, the goal has always been bigger than building an audience. We’re building something that can outlive us.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but we never expected it to be.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to work together as father and son while also being business partners. Those are two very different relationships. As a father, there’s a natural tendency to want to lead, advise, and protect. As a son, there’s a desire to establish your own identity, make your own decisions, and be respected for what you bring to the table.
Sometimes those dynamics overlap, and we’ve had to learn how to navigate them.
We’ve also had to overcome the challenges that come with building an independent media platform. Producing content, coordinating schedules, developing partnerships, funding projects, and maintaining consistency all require time and resources. Much of that work happens behind the scenes, long before anyone sees a finished episode or attends an event.
Another challenge has been allowing ourselves to be vulnerable publicly. When you’re having conversations about family, relationships, personal mistakes, and generational differences, you’re opening yourself up to criticism. Not everyone will agree with your perspective, and sometimes the person sitting across from you won’t agree either.
But that’s part of the point.
We don’t believe healthy relationships require people to agree on everything. Sometimes growth comes from being willing to have the conversation in the first place.
We’ve learned that building something meaningful requires patience, consistency, and the willingness to keep showing up, even when things aren’t moving as quickly as you’d like.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Pops & Son Conversations is a father-son media network and community platform dedicated to bridging generational gaps through honest dialogue, education, entertainment, and shared experiences.
At the center of our work is our podcast, where we explore subjects ranging from fatherhood and relationships to financial literacy, entrepreneurship, mental health, and personal development. We approach these conversations from two generational perspectives, which allows us to challenge one another while giving our audience an opportunity to consider ideas they may not have encountered otherwise.
But our work doesn’t stop at the microphone.
We’re interested in creating tangible opportunities for people to improve their lives. That includes connecting our audience with resources related to credit, business development, financial education, mentorship, and community involvement.
Our work also extends well beyond the podcast. We created the Esteemed Gents League (EGL), an initiative centered on bringing people together through community engagement, mentorship, and shared experiences. We also produce and host our Fashion Experiences, which have taken place in Atlanta, Georgia; St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Minnesota, with plans to expand into additional locations.
Our upcoming Veterans Day Fashion Experience, scheduled for November 8, 2026, continues that mission by bringing the community together while celebrating and honoring veterans. Through these initiatives, we’re creating spaces for people to connect, showcase their talents, build relationships, and discover opportunities that extend beyond the events themselves.
What sets us apart is the relationship at the center of everything we do. We’re not two personalities brought together for a show. We’re actually father and son. We have a lifetime of shared experiences, disagreements, lessons, and memories that inform the way we communicate.
Our conversations aren’t always polished, and we don’t want them to be. We believe there’s value in letting people see two generations working through their differences in real time.
One of the things we’re most proud of is taking our message beyond digital media. Whether it’s participating in youth initiatives, supporting community events, or creating spaces for people to connect, we’re demonstrating that conversations can lead to action.
Ultimately, we want Pops & Son Conversations to be remembered for more than the content we produced. We want it to be remembered for the relationships we helped strengthen and the opportunities we helped create.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Our advice would be to stop looking at mentorship as simply finding someone successful who can tell you what to do.
A good mentor is someone who challenges the way you think, holds you accountable, and is willing to share the lessons they’ve learned, including the mistakes they’ve made along the way.
Sometimes that person is already in your family or community. Other times, you have to step outside your immediate circle and build relationships with people whose experiences are different from your own.
Networking works the same way. Too many people approach relationships thinking about what they can get from someone. We believe it’s more productive to ask what you can contribute.
Show up. Support other people’s work. Be willing to learn, and don’t underestimate the importance of following through on your word.
One of the things our platform demonstrates is that mentorship can work in both directions. A father may have decades of experience to share with his son, but that doesn’t mean he has nothing to learn from him.
Every generation has something to teach the next, and something to learn from the one coming behind it.
The most valuable relationships are built on mutual respect, not just age, status, or accomplishments.
