Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Freericks.
Hi Sara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I didn’t know I wanted to be a makeup and special effects artist until the end of college. I was going to college for fine arts because at the time I wanted to be a tattoo artist and have more knowledge about art history and things like that. Going through a lot of the art classes was fun but it wasn’t anything fulfilling until I got to my graphic design class. I had this professor for multiple classes as well as the graphic design and he understood that I was not strong in Photoshop so he allowed me to create a project in a make up look. The project was to re-create a movie poster and I had “House of Wax”, oh I did a whole look where I had half of my base melting with some of the teeth going in with it and there is just something about that kind of really gave me the idea of this is what I need to be doing for my career in for my life.
After college, I did little make up gigs here and they’re doing sweet 16s and little parties like that until I went to make up school New York. After I graduated from the make up and special effects school I’ve just been working on film sets doing features, shorts, episodes as well as doing photo shoots. I absolutely love what I do and the hustle of that has become of it is really exciting and can be thrilling but just being your own boss is absolutely incredible because then I can do anything that I love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel like everyone has their own bumps in the road with what goes on in their life. Not having a car or reliable way to get transportation especially in the city and out of the city was definitely a huge struggle and it just gave me more fuel to my hustle to save and get a car to have more flexibility and an easier time for myself. Trains and subways are definitely reliable but not being a native from New York I still get confused with how the subways run especially. So I drive everywhere.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a make up artist and special effects artist for film and TV work as well as photoshoots. They specialize in special effects as well as old age, beauty makeup and avant-garde make up. I’m most proud for my special effects work because of how realistic they can be; I love doing injury special effects so that involve bullet wounds, bruises, slit throats things of that nature. I think my attention to detail sets me apart and how I think about the character. Each character is somebody completely different with a complete new personality so trying to think of little details like nail polish all the way down to if the person would have a fake tan or not because of the way that the character is written. It’s a very thought-through process and little details like that are really important.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I love doing trade for print work so I can collaborate with either other artists or other photographers. Finding somebody who has the same work ethic as you is probably the number one most important thing, that all alone can help with support and is very important to have so you can also get recommended but it builds really amazing business relationships.
