Today we’d like to introduce you to Soulo & Zhen.
Hi Soulo & Zhen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a mother-daughter team, we’ve always done colorful arts and crafts projects together (such as painting, jewelry making, and transforming household items). After participating in Atlanta’s art scene as spectators for so long, we finally decided to share our own painting creations. About a year ago, we began seriously marketing and attending local art events through organizers such as Cryptid Creatives Marketplaces, BlaQueer Art Market, and Artists & Fleas. Marketing online through social media and our website has been helpful, but interacting with our community in person and making real connections has given us the confidence boost we needed to keep going and explore more opportunities. Lately, we’ve been focusing on collaborative art projects and bringing improvised art into community spaces, events, and corporate settings.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our most recent challenge has been deciding which events to participate in because there are always multiple things going on in Atlanta – especially in the summertime! We are extremely grateful for the many opportunities that come to us. Being a small business, we’ve also learned that prioritizing and discerning which events to attend is vital to helping us reach our goals. When you have a passion for something, it may be easier for your judgment to be clouded. We believe that it’s best to take risks that coincide with the potential we see for our art while also sticking to our budget! It can also be challenging to stay motivated in the fast-paced environment and constant stimulation created by social media. It’s been essential for us to set boundaries within our business to find a balance between keeping up with innovations in art while still acknowledging our own achievements and taking personal time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Our artwork mainly incorporates vibrant acrylic paints on canvases ranging from 2×2 inch miniatures to as large as 40×60 inch large fabrics. We are most proud that there are so many different people displaying our artwork in their homes and businesses! We also recently initiated a group painting at the Piedmont Park Art Festival. It started with some brushes, paints, and a blank canvas that anyone could add to. And it ended with a fulfilling and dynamic combination of so many styles, shapes, and figures! What sets us apart is our style of improvised painting and creating without expectations. Although owning a business requires a lot of planning, making our paintings allows us to tap into our spontaneity.
What matters most to you? Why?
That we get to share the positive and uplifting emotions that we evoke with lively colors and patterns in our pieces. We really value new experiences and hope that we can provide that for others through our artwork and performances.
