Life & Work with Susie Mickler of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susie Mickler.

Hi Susie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
What started as something to do for friends and family, grew into SchmooPies in 2021. My background is in market development for financial services and I’ve always loved finding new ways to cultivate client relationships. As you hear so often, I started the business just to make a little extra money on the side and it grew from there. I give credit to our friends and owners of a local BBQ restaurant for encouraging me to sell the pies which is how we started. I baked for them as a birthday surprise and he immediately told me he would love to sell them on his menu. From there, it just took off. We started with our Original Fudge pie and then started adding addtional flavors and sizes as the need arose. Currently we offer around ten different fudge flavors, seasonal fruits and savory quiches. We sell direct on our website as well as wholesale our pies and participate with farmers markets and holiday events across the state.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is anything smooth that is worth achieving? I doubt anyone doesn’t have a story. As I mentioned, we started in March 2021 as just a side business to make a little extra money. In May 2021, my husband lost his job and it was a blessing to have started this business to begin the ramp up. He jumped right in and helped bake as I worked full time – with a 45 minute commute in office. By December, right after the holidays, he had found a new role and we survived our first holiday season.
In 2023, I was able to move to full time with our business. We’ve been blessed to grow our business year over year even with Bird Flu quadrupling egg prices, cargo ship issues for ingredient deliver, you name it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
One of my favorite things to share is our faith and how it was critical for getting through job loss and starting a company all at the same time. One of my favorite sermons shared by my father in law was titled Keep your fork, the best is yet to come.
The story aligns the frequent use of the line when about to serve dessert and knowing as a faith, that not to be disappointed that the best is yet to come. That plays into our company clearing. We are founded as a family business which loves to share our sweet and savory treats.
Our name is founded from the nickname I used for my oldest son when he was younger, Schmoopy. My friend pointed out the plural was Schmoopies or SchmooPies and the name was born. Not to be left out, we names our small bite size pies Mini Me’s which is what I called my youngest – before he grew to be over a foot taller than me.
We have been rewared with Best of Georgia in desserts and are proud to be nominated again for 2026. Making that four nominations in just under 6 years.

Any big plans?
We’re always looking to continue to find opportunities to expand our wholesaling partners while keeping the integrity of the pies.
