LoRen of Pittsburgh on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with LoRen and have shared our conversation below.

LoRen, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My little family brings so much joy and color to my life. I have a four year old girl and one year old boy. I adore them. The laughs, the messiness, being their mom is my favorite job.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is LoRen, I am a classically trained singer/songwriter. I am a disciple, event curator, and slow cooker. Since a child, I have taken my time to create thought provoking music on my own terms. The freedom I have found in following God has ignited a passion for justice, love, and hard conversation that I boldy infuse into my lyrics. I am committed to using my resources to elevate other like minded creatives. For the last five years I have hosted an annual music experience entitled, ” NO COVERS.” I gather diverse, professional singer/songwriters to share personal interviews and live performances in a quirky yet intimate setting. I draw outside the lines. I am constantly looking to share stories that need to be shared, or teaming up with other artists to elevate voices that are screaming to be heard.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I used to believe I was special.
I believed my writing, singing, aura, and hard work ethic made me unique.
I had great success as a teenager, and performed infront of thousands often.
I heard the phrase, “you’re going to be a star,” multiple times a week.
I was willing to give up everything to prove, I was special.
I have now found there is freedom on the other side of being special. If no one is watching. I can do what I want. I am free now. I no longer have to be special, I can just be.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
The last time I was close to giving up, was after my second child was born, about 10 months ago. I felt like my life was too chaotic to keep creating music with two small children. It was the closest to giving up I have ever been. Instead, of giving up, I just decided throw out my timeline, let go of unrealistic expectations, enjoy my babies, and to just write about it all.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, but I do often feel misunderstood.
I’m one of those people that leave a social setting wishing I said almost everything differently. I am shy yet silly in the real world. People are often suprised that I am very introverted because I mask it very well. I am alot of things at once I suppose.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What pain do you resist facing directly?
Suprisingly, I often resist facing pure joy at times.
I often prepare myself for worst case scenarios. I am actively trying to do better with that. I just want to be present, and not let anxiety win.
